Be prepared to be harassed by the chief and officers from DWR division wildlife resources. They are dishonest and make pathetic accusations. I was stopped on the trail accussed of shooting early but the chief did NOT know where I was at start time. Chief and officers were harassing every one on the dike i was on. (While we were stopped and hunters passed the chief singled officers to stop them). I did not shoot before shooting hours and he wrote me up for it. He shared the hunters out it the boats started 10 minutes early, but the DWR was not prepared with a boat to talk to Hunters who shot early. Opening of the duck hunt and the DWR forgot to bring a boat. The chief asked me to give him money to buy a boat. How pathetic is the DWR begging for money from hunters on the shore. I am sure the chief and his ticket book along with dishonest accusations will have enough money to buy a boat by the end of the day. The DWR ruined the duck hunt opener. The first time Hunter who was with us said he would NOT go again. Thanks...

So there are a couple things new families should consider before going. On the South (East) entrance, there is a little park with paved trails, a jetty to fish on, and a public restroom. There is access to the levy's here but is hunted from August to February, then open for a short time, and then closed on March 1st.

In the North entrance there is a Main Center (under reconstruction as of 2-2017) and a nature trail. The nature trail is open year round and is safe from hunters. Currently you need to park all the way out by the road and walk in because of the construction but it is still open to...

Excellent birdwatching spot. Good quality roads suitable for any cars. Lots of the waterfowl are visible with the naked eye from the road. Beware that this area is heavily used by hunters, especially on the weekends, in the fall and winter. So, expect distant shotgun reports. During times of heavy hunting pressure the birds will stay in the middle of the ponds and are not as easily viewable. The best time is probably late winter when the hunting season is over or early fall before it starts. (By the way, I love duck hunters and I’m so grateful for their contribution to waterfall...

The Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area covers an area of approximately 18,000 acres of land, wetland and lakes. It serves as a natural habitat for migratory and nesting shorebirds. This reserve is excellent for bird watching, photography and fall waterfowl hunting with over 200 documented species. Among the most attractive birds to be seen are the bald eagles, the American white pelican and the great blue heron. A very nice place to visit in every season, but winter brings the larger number of eagles and pelicans.

We drove along the snow and ice covered muddy roads, happy we didn't bring the minivan. The scenery was peaceful, and we saw an amazing blue heron, kestrel, ducks, geese, bald eagles and several other raptors and water fowl. We also stopped at the information center and hiked around the area in the snow. The hike took us closer to the water and there are plenty of benches along the path. It was a great couple of hours to spend with binoculars and a camera and snow-worthy boots.
