This place is really cool. They have tried to preserve it the best they can. It's really cool to see almost all three sites of this fort. They have the star shaped earthen fort the one closer to the mountains that you can see but cannot get to I'm almost certain it's on private property and then the ruins you can walk through. You have part of the Santa Fe trail that runs through here in a couple of spots I can imagine stopping here after a long bumpy ride on a wagon. Just a side note all roads to this location are paved. The path might work for walking it's crunchy gravel so no wheelchairs or stroller at least I wouldn't think you would use them. If I ever make it back here, I will go again. They have plenty of parking and bathroom. Plus a kind of small gift...

Star fort is basically off limits. No photos of construction. Told to visit “archives” to find information about ruin I was standing near. Historical lies from the USNPS. Hidden history. Tons of access to broken down buildings, but cannot walk an ancient fort. Excuses about “preserving Spanish trail” yet there’s a 2-lane road paved along/over the Spanish trail. More waste of our tax money. Go to the archives building (apparently). Will not find true info here, only lies. Webmaster makes assumptions people are not interested, which is why there is not in-depth info on star fortress. Tons of info on dirt shacks, but not complex star design positioned on earth energy field. (Would 0-star this...

I’ve awarded 5 stars for the preservation efforts and historical significance which is well worth the short detour (about 15 minutes off I-25). Fort Union has gone through three iterations. The last was the largest and most impressive. The National Park Service is going an excellent job in preserving and restoring this important landmark. Fort Union played an important role in the Civil War and trade and commerce. Fort Union supplied military installations for hundreds of miles and was the home to the first U.S. Calvary. Large historic Fort Union National Monument has guided trails with information about the Fort. Takes 30-45 minutes to see his historic site with all its buildings. Rangers warn you to stay on the trails(paths) and be onlooker for rattlesnakes!! We didn't see any, make sure you have water because it's hot during the summer. It's Free admission, very clean restrooms, gift shop has a lot of wonderful items. There are picnic tables covered if you want to eat.

Beautiful scenery with an easy 1.5 mile walk. You can still see ruins from a distance in the parking lot and there is information indoors as well. Pretty chilly out with a little snow on the ground early March 2024. Sun was shining and there is information about these historic ruins along the trail that explains what each of the buildings were used for when they were functional. Would love to go again and spend a few hours to take it all in.
