First, let me say that my review is specifically about the campground. We did not have the chance to explore the park, other than to drive through. Please read entire review.
Campsite: Overall, the layout was nice and you can really get more privacy than at other places. We stayed in a tent on section of the campground, loop J. The site itself was very nice, wooded, with a tent and, picnic table on a level base and a fire ring. Each were on their own level, which my little one tripped over a few times. Tent pad was a packed sand, so not a bad base for sleeping. Our specific site was a bit of a walk from the road, so it was a bit more work to unpack.
The Ranger station was never opened while we were in the campground, so you have no ability to buy firewood and all of the evening Ranger talks and activities had been cancelled -not sure if the reason. If you are coming into the sites in the late afternoon, you'll want to buy firewood outside of the park and bring it in, nearest gas station was 10 minutes away and was running low.
Main shower house was fine, $1 for 4 minutes and .25 for each additional minute. Would be great if they added more hooks in shower area!
Within the same building is laundry, dish and vending machines, including one to get bags of ice.
None of the bathrooms provide handsoap or hand sanitizer.
The bathroom in the J loop was filthy. Smelled worse than pit toilets, sinks were caked with gross things and the floor was dirty. I used some of my personal supplies to clean the counter and sink one night just to feel better. It really does not appear that they do any level of cleaning, so be prepared.
The last thing I'll mention is that to get in/out of this site, you have a 35 minute drive on the mountain with very twisty roads. If you are coming to camp and are not planning to leave the park, it's probably not a big deal, but if you are planning to explore a wider area, be prepared to add some drive time.
In the end, our family would not...
ย ย ย Read moreGolden Gate is the perfect place to take the family for the weekend or just a day. With numerous trails with all varieties of difficulty there is something for everyone. No matter what trail you choose all of the trails are well maintained and great in thier own way. The roads are dirt in some areas of the park, but are also well maintained and just about any car can handle. Lots of overlooks and benches to sit back and enjoy the veiw of the lakes and mountains sorrounding you. The fishing is however questionable, there are many many people fishing and quickly the fishing can get tedious. However if you time it right and go about a week after the ponds have been stocked then you will have a great experience at the lake and ponds. The camp sites have a nice amount of room if you are looking to camp. A small thing I should point out that to me is a positive but should still be well known is that you should not expect to be getting a cell signal here at all. I have talked to a few people who in certain places can get a few bars but for the most part there is...
ย ย ย Read moreMy family and I have been camping here for ten yrs and it's simply gorgeous!! The trails are incredible, there are plenty of them that you can hike here a couple times a summer and for several years never repeat hike (if you don't like that) some of the trails are very hard, whereas some of them are not extremely difficult (several trails can be hike by kids, (above 5) And not take the wind out of them). Bring lots and lots of water, as it can get very warm during the summer and be aware that when you are hiking, fishing or picnicking during the afternoon your are going to have a very good chance that during the summe you are going to be rained on. Usually not for very long but it can hang on for hrs. Fishing is good, when they stock it but the state has dropped the ball so none of lakes have been stocked since May 2017 so fishing is a bit difficult to do without a lot of time. A note, the sites are mostly secluded but when you get a group of loud neighbors it can rlly be a wet blanket on your trip. So just be aware that it...
