Walnut Canyon National Monument in Flagstaff is a unique historical site that is not to miss. The monument has two hikes, an up close look at Native American dwellings, and the Visitor Center offers informative resources. Don’t forget about the Junior Ranger Badge opportunity for kids too! The monument provides two hiking trails that commence from the Visitor Center. The first is a short rim trail hike, allowing amazing views of Walnut Canyon and passing by a mesa top ruin. This flat and paved trail is 0.7 miles round trip. The second hike, known as the Island Trail, leads down into the canyon through the ruins. This trail descends significantly, featuring over 300 stairs and a 185-foot drop in elevation. Keep in mind that what goes down must come up! We had to take it slow coming up (and a sleepy 4 year old didn’t help much either, ha). Although many ruins have crumbled over time, you can closely observe the ones still intact, nestled within crevices in the rock. You can still spot remnants of fire and smoke scorch marks. The trail eventually loops back to the descent point, from where you climb back up to the top. We 100% loved this hike and getting to respectfully explore the dwellings. It was worth the stair hike for sure. It is important to note that the park closes at 5:00 PM, with restrictions on starting the hikes after specific times. The Rim Trail hike should be started by 4:30 PM, and for the Island Trail, the cutoff time is 4:00 PM. Plan your itinerary accordingly to make the most of your visit. Walnut Canyon National Monument is a treasure trove of historical significance and natural beauty. Definitely put this spot on your list to visit! Located about 20 min west of downtown Flagstaff. More great hikes coming your way in 2023, as we attempt the 52 Hikes challenge this year! (17 out of 52 documented, more have been done.) Last October I visited Walnut Canyon National Monument in Flagstaff and was blown away by the cliff dwellings and history. Anyone who travels with me knows I love stopping to view and learn what I can about ancient cultures and Walnut Canyon is one of my favorites! Nestled high into the sides of the cliffs are hundreds of Sinagua cliff dwellings accessed by narrow trails and sketchy climbs. How they did this prior to an actual trail being built is beyond me! While they lived here for a couple hundred years they farmed corn, squash, and beans on the rim. If you want to visit Walnut Canyon there are 2 trails inside the park: • Island Trail- a 1.0 mile loop that descends down into the canyon and past 25 of the dwellings. While it is short it is very steep to come back up. This is the one you want to do! • Rim Trail- a 0.7 mile loop that takes you along a portion of the rim. There are 2 viewpoints to allow you to view the cliff dwellings below, a demonstration garden, and a partially rebuilt outhouse and a Pueblo along the trail. ✨ While visiting please be respectful to the cultures, history, and park rangers here! There are a few dwellings you are allowed to walk into but some you may not. Follow all signs/regulations and don’t touch the walls or carve into rocks. #walnutcanyon #flagstaffarizona #flagstaffaz #visitflagstaff #flagstaffhiking #visitarizona #arizonatravel #adventuretravel

This is a must trail to visit. It has a spectacular view and learned the history of the past and how people used to live here. Going down the trail was pretty nice, but going up will be harder due to many steps. Parking was pretty expensive at $25! But, it's worth it.

Such a beautiful and unique hike. After traversing a couple hundred stairs, the trail loops around to view ancient cliff dwellings. You walk along about midway down a deep canyon. Views across the canyon give peeks at undisturbed dwellings. If you go early spring, the snowmelt makes the river flow below.

Please do not underestimate the need for water on this hike. It begins and ends with a challenging stair climb. There are benches and resting spots along the way, but water is key to...

The island trail is a well maintained 1-mile loop which takes you from the Visitor Center down into the canyon to get an up-close view of the cliff house ruins. There are lots of educational signs along the route explaining the history of the location. There are a lot of steps down/up at the beginning/end, and no water or restrooms are available on the trail itself, although both can be accessed in the Visitor Center. It was a beautiful walk! Highly...

Beautiful views, and I learned lots of new things. This hike has 736 total stairs - down first, then up on the return trip. No laughing matter, take it slow and bring lots of water. The hike is definitely worth it if you're able - the dwellings are really cool to see up close, there are lots of signs to teach you about the life of the people who lived there, as well as the geology and botany of the...
