I recently had the opportunity to visit the San Rafael Reef in Emery County, Utah. It was a truly unforgettable experience! Standing at the edge of the San Rafael Reef, I was surrounded by soaring cliffs and sandstone domes that seem to stretch as far as the eye can see. The windswept landscape is breathtaking and the deep canyons cut through it add to its beauty.

The varied geology of this natural wonder is really quite remarkable. The San Rafael Reef is made up of steeply tilted Navajo and Wingate Sandstone layers, which have been carved and sculpted over time into tall fins, domes, cliffs and canyons. Interspersed between these formations are narrow, slot-like canyons such as Crack Canyon, Chute Canyon and Straight Wash – all with their own unique characteristics.

Moreover, there are several rivers that carve their way through the San Rafael Reef including The San Rafael River, Interstate 70 and Muddy Creek. These waterways provide a stunning contrast to the rugged desert terrain of this area. I couldn't believe how much nature has been preserved here despite its location so close to civilization.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my trip to the San Rafael Reef. Its breathtaking landscapes make it a must-see destination for anyone looking for an awe-inspiring outdoor adventure in...

We stopped here on our way from Moab to Kanab. A stunning rest stop that showcases the dramatic and otherworldly beauty of the San Rafael Reef. This geologic wonder is part of the larger San Rafael Swell, a massive anticline of folded and uplifted rock layers that have been eroded into a series of jagged ridges, deep canyons, and colorful cliffs. The view area offers travelers a chance to marvel at the rugged, almost alien landscape, with its towering sandstone formations and sweeping desert vistas stretching as far as the eye can see.

This stop is not only a visual treat but also a window into Utah's rich geologic history. The San Rafael Reef was formed over millions of years, with layers of rock revealing stories of ancient oceans, shifting continents, and relentless erosion. Interpretive signs at the site provide insights into the forces that shaped this unique terrain. Whether you're a geology enthusiast, a photographer, or simply a road-tripper seeking a moment of awe, the San Rafael Reef View Area is a memorable and inspiring...

Save for your next Utah roadtrip 🤩 One of the coolest (and most underrated) scenic byways in Utah will take you right through the San Rafael Swell. Formed over 60 million years ago, the Swell is made up of colorful sandstone, deep slot canyons, towering mesas, and so much more 😍 Start by camping along the rim at The Wedge Overlook—aka Utah’s Little Grand Canyon 🏜️ The views are unreal, the campsites perfection, and the sunrises and sunsets here are unmatched 🧡 The next day, hit the scenic drive down Buckhorn Wash Road, a route that winds through towering sandstone cliffs and offers several must-see stops: 📍Ancient rock art at Buckhorn Wash Panel—huge pictographs painted thousands of years ago offering a glimpse into the lives of the region’s early inhabitants. 📍A real dinosaur footprint—just a short walk from the road and clearly marked, this preserved three-toed dinosaur track is estimated to be over 180 million years old. 📍The MK Tunnels—eerie Cold War-era concrete bunkers tucked into the cliffs. These structures were part of military experiments and now stand as intriguing historical landmarks. 📍A quick hike through Furniture Draw, a mellow 3.7 mile slot canyon with fun rock formations. 📍The historic Swinging Bridge, a 160 ft suspension bridge built in the 1930s. While no longer open to motor traffic, it’s accessible for pedestrians and offers beautiful views of the San Rafael River. This part of Utah is wild, quiet, full of surprises, and perfect for a weekend of desert exploring—especially in the spring and fall ☺️ If you love nature, hiking, traveling, and a little bit of adventure, follow me @thatoutdoorsygal and let’s be friends 🥰 Enjoy the beauty, but always leave it better than you found it—let’s keep nature wild and wonderful 💚 #leavenotrace #desertlife #canyonviews #sanrafaelswell #outdoorsy #beutahful #naturetherapy #getoutside #wildandfree #uniqueplaces #historytravel
