Read moreLATE JANUARY 2023.. Sonoran Desert National Monument camping at Freeman Road off of I-8 (app. 90 miles west of Tucson, AZ). Location is 15 miles from Gila Bend and 26 miles from Maricopa. Lots of restaurants, Walmart, grocery stores and gas stations in Maricopa. ...Sonoran Desert Natl Monument has 10 or 11 campsites off of Freeman Road on mostly paved roads 8009 and 8009F. 2 or 3 campsites are near the information board. A little further in are 4 campsites up the right road 8009. This road is rough, with no privacy, but do accept large RVs - 35'. 4 nice campsites down the left road 8009F accept smaller RVs and tent campers. 2 campsites provide a fair amount of privacy. Highway traffic noise can be heard. Cell service was excellent (T-Mobile) as there is a cell tower nearby. Downside: dirt bikes came in and drove down a wash off of 8009F. They did target practice with loud guns when target practice is NOT allowed at this Sonoran...
Read moreBeautiful drive if you like the desert. You'll see miles and miles of old West landscape. Beautiful saguaro cacti stand as lone sentinels, seemingly unchanged since the beginning of time. We saw one about 12 feet tall whose two arms have grown to the center. At the tip of each arm were bright yellow blossoms. It appeared as if the cactus was holding a bouquet. If you are traveling at twilight you are sure to see big Jack rabbits that speed across the sand. If you're lucky you will see a Roadrunner, its crazy and delightful hair-do making it look like an errant school boy. Cartoonish appearance aside, this desert dweller is graceful. Chances are you won't see a coyote but from dusk to early morning there's a fair chance you will hear them. Take water and a camera...
