It's a steep hike, but very much worth it.
Timp Caves is an easy drive up American Fork Canyon - be prepared for 2 things, a ranger pay station (if you're going to the caves or the visitor's center then you don't have to pay) and then the lack of phone reception about half a mile in.
Be sure to get tickets for the tours well ahead of time on the recreation.gov website - because you can't just go inside whenever you want. But if you just want to 'feel the burn', then you can go ahead and hike the trail just for kicks. I think you need a pass for that too, but it's free.
Bring a water bottle and have good shoes. It's about 1,100 feet of elevation gain starting at about 5,600 feet. So you're a mile up in elevation before you even start. Be ready if it's your first time. It's STEEP!
But once you get to the top, as well as all along it, the view is insanely beautiful, no matter what time of...
Read moreWent to Timp cave with my brother for the first time since I moved to Utah (2009). When we first arrived at the visitor center, they asked if I'd read up about the white bats. I replied that I had, even though I didn't, but my brother blurted out that he hadn't. The nice lady turned to me and asked if I'd inform him about the bats. Touche. Incredibly embarrassed, I fessed up and told her I hadn't actually read about the bats, and I still haven't forgiven my bro.
So you know, The gist of the bat reading is that you should not wear clothing that you've ever worn into another cave.
The hike was great, and the views were even better, but best of all was the time I got to spend with my bro. The cave itself was much more interesting than I'd thought it would be. I'm definitely planning to come back for the...
Read moreYou definitely have to work to get to the cave, but it makes it all the more rewarding and is SO worth it!! The views are breathtaking along the way and the cave, in my 10 year old son's words "must be what Heaven looks like." It was awesome to share that experience with my kids (ages 10, 8, 6, and 4 btw and they did awesome.) The trail is all paved and I did it in flip flops (didn't have tennies with me) and I was just fine. Tennis shoes would have been preferable, but if like me you didn't pack them, don't let it stop you! Also, Ranger Ruth was our tour guide and she was enthusiastic and lovely and sweet with the kids. Took her time to explain and answer all our questions. A wonderful experience...
