Absolutely lovely. Feels like it's part state-park, part family homestead! We had a wonderful time camping and exploring. There was a wedding on one of our nights there, so it might be the first time I ever camped to the sound of 80's dance tunes, but the event didn't run too late and it added to that "family homestead" feel. Word of caution about the trails: apparently major flooding from some time ago has left some changes we didn't anticipate and it looks like the area near the salt spring has been cut off from direct access. When we went up the gorge trail, we returned on the hemlock trail and expected to be able to cross fall brook in some way to get back. But there was no way to cross fall brook without going in the water. Considering I only had one pair of hiking shoes with me and didnt dare get them wet, I took them off, rolled up my pants, and walked across the stream. My estimate of the water temperature is probably 40 degrees! Considering the ambient temp was around 50, that was COLD and my feet didn't get their color back for an hour! Still, it was fun and beautiful and I would happily do...
Read moreThis is a private/State ran park but the state isn't giving any money for maintenance if I understood correctly. The waterfalls that we could see were very nice and pretty. There was definitely one that was hidden and could not be viewed safely. The trails are marked but not super clear. We followed one trail along a creek with some water and then followed another trail on the other side of the creek. We ended up back at the picnic area and we're we parked our car but a small river/creek separated us. This body of water had quite a bit in it and there was no safe way to cross. The rocks in the water of course had slime on them. No bridge or safe walkway. We decided to role up our pants and take off our shoes and socks to wade across very slowly. If we had turned around to walk back around it would have taken another hour and half or longer. Very concerned for a couple of elderly people who were in the same predicament. There should be some signs or warning that there isn't a safe crossing or no crossing at all. Better yet the state could help with a simple bridge...
Read moreThis place is beautiful. First timers hit up the wood walking paths and the waterfalls. Large remote trails, short well maintained ones... plenty to see. The friends of salt springs keep this place maintained pretty well. Pound a couple pennies into the flatrocks near the lookout. Must be a tradition, there's about 7 dollars worth of pennies hammered into that thing.
I love this place.
Bring your dog, but please leash them... i know, i know... he/she's well behaved. LEASH THEM ANYWAY. If your off leash dog comes close to mine i will kick it. fair warning.
If we end up as ultimate fighters within the druidic octagon that is Salt Springs Park... so be it, get angry about it and be offended... I am still punting your dog away. Too many folks screaming out "HE'S FRIENDLY" and then suddenly it's out of control and they're 200 leagues away sending up smoke signals of peace. Go ahead, take it personally, make it worth it... regardless: Boot to the Skull Vs. putting...
