My family and I rent the group camp at Bogue Chitto State Park each year for our family and friends to come for the entire stay or just a part of it. It has 50 beds so we have plenty space and the kids can bring friends without the need to worry about sleeping space. The park itself is wonderful and well maintained. The additional services provided at the park are better than in the rest of the state. In years past I would have given 6 stars (if possible). However, this year the ice machine was not working and we were not alerted to this fact until check in. Also, there was a terrible smell coming from one of the two bathrooms in the camp. After further inspection, we found raw sewerage outside of the camp (back corner outside the kitchen) from either a clogged, broken or overflowing septic tank. It was a weekend and when we alerted someone, we were told that he only cleans the bathrooms and that staff would be back on Monday and we should tell them. Also, upon check in we discovered that one of the knobs to the shower was broken.
As a side note, every campsite and pavilion has an outdoor grill available to campers. The group camp does not. We had to bring our own grill and/or use one at a pavilion then haul our food back. We chose to bring our own. I think they should consider installing a grill at the group camp. Possible a large once since the camp sleeps 50 people.
All and all, we made the best of the trip. We spent most of our time outside anyways. Between the river beach, the river overlook, bike trails, hiking trials, tubing, kayaking, and splash pad we had a great trip. We will book this camp again in the future but will be sure to inspect it for raw sewerage before we put a...
Read moreWe have come to this park multiple times in the last 5 years and have loved it. We have been here different times of the years for all kinds of holidays. However this July 4th the park was a big disappointment. First and foremost the sites (we have stayed at many including upland and bottom land) are not as well maintained including trails, public places and actual sites. We have been here since June 29th and it’s July 4th which is a busy time I get it we always stay here July 4th for at least 10 days. Every single dumpster is overflowing, 6th out of the 8 bath stalls have been overflowing with human waste, and no toilet paper replaced since June 30th. Almost every site has not been mowed, or treated for huge ant mounds (yes it’s the wilderness but it’s always been taken care of in the past). This year there has been no camp host to enforce quiet hours and or to contact with issues. The main check in and out house when you drive in to register; when you call it is busy signal no matter what day or time you call during open hours and if you drive there they don’t have the staff or help to fix the issues. Our site and many others from campers we have met were not cleaned up after each RV left. I wish I could leave more stars as we have in the past but it’s not warranted this trip. I understand Covid happened but that doesn’t seem like a viable excuse to open a park and then not have it maintained. If you don’t have the resources then don’t open the park. People pay good money to haul here and set up from all over. It’s...
Read moreLodge and Cabin 4 were very nice. Saw a hooded warbler outside our window, who was very interested in us. Screened in porch also, nice to sit out on while or in the early morning or evening, but too hot at other times. We saw lightning bugs and heard a LOT of different animal sounds at night. The large pond at the day use area was stocked with lots of fish. Nice water slide, splash pad, and playground there also, as well as rest rooms and changing rooms. Plenty of tables there also for picnics. If you want to go tubing, kayaking, or canoeing you should call beforehand. The in park outfit was only open on the weekend, and the out-of-park business, which goes through the park, has different open days, also different prices and length of time for trip.|Mosquitoes are an issue, so bring bug spray. Wasps and bugs will try to get in your shelter, so bring a swatter and/or bug spray. Never saw the RV area, but walked to the beach area after a rain, had to walk through a couple of low spots with a few inches of water to get there, but pretty. Wear water shoes or other to the beach, there are rocks and gravel. Ice is available for purchase outside the main office, and also at nearby Dollar Generals.|Nice gorge trail, but is pretty long. Office personnel are very helpful. Very wooded, and well maintained. |Cabins have a dishwasher and wash powder, paper towels and toilet paper, at least enough to get you started. A/C worked great. TV so you can watch news and sports. WiFi...
