I always have loved this building. I grew up attending many, many events here. This building is cared for and fully restored to be as historically accurate as possible to the days of Captain Vicary, down to the paint colors on the walls. Yes, they are shocking at first but paint chips where analyzed and the colors on the walls are accurate.
Brenda Applegate and other members of the council work very hard to educate and familiarize the community with the Vicary house. They hold several events there through out the year, notably Windows through History, (a program for young girls to learn about different time periods, dress up, and partake in period customs). Other events are a Christmas event, multiple reenactments throughout the year, and just today I was there for their Halloween event.
You can learn so much from just taking a tour. Admission is free, though you can leave donations for the house, which is always...

While on our anniversary trip, we decided to take a tour of The Captain William Vicary Mansion. The tour is a not your normal tour of perfected rooms, but what was called a “structure” tour which showcases what makes the mansion so sound and standing for many years. A few exposed walls, original built-ins and an Ash Room that you will view in 2 areas of the house. Within, you will also find lots of decor and other items here and there showing their age to the mansion.
A learning center currently, there is a lot going on inside that offers classes showing the community how life was done back in those days. I actually wished I lived closer so my kids could participate! Very cool!
Pretty flowers and gardens around the exterior. Would definitely recommend a visit if you love history!
Runs by donation. Wheelchair accessible entrance....
Read moreThe building and artifacts are very cool. However, what makes this a fantastic visit back into history is the volunteers that tell the stories, explain how they did life back then, and allow others to try. I went with my family and we left with so much more knowledge than we started with. My kiddos also left with a list of many things they wanted to try after learning. Thank you to the fabulous volunteers there.
Also, while it was free to enter, consider a nice donation to help keep programs like this going. These programs bring history alive for kids...
