An oasis of calm and beauty only a mile or so from the Freeport outlets. One parks half a mile away and walks through woods to the farm. The wonderfully simple, almost stark, white saltbox farmhouse gradually appears, on the brow of a hill above the Harreseeket River, The house is set amidst vast rolling grassy fields, with paths mown for further walking, all bordered by forest. There are a couple of small outbuilding, but larger barns etc have disappeared, throwing the modest house, with its wood-shaked roof , into greater prominence. Most days it's perfectly quiet, though when the wind is in the wrong direction one can hear the low rumble of traffic on the interstate. One is likely to have the whole place almost to oneself, and can wallow gratefully in the peace...
Read moreI'm so glad we went to Pettengill Farm for their Farm Day. Music, crafts for the kids, farm animals, and sawyers. Theere was food there, but we didn't have any. The Boy Scouts were pressing apple cider and giving out samples. There was also a wagon ride, which we kept missing. We were able to tour the home. Don't expect a restored museum home. This place is in rough shape, but what a story the peeling wall paper and exposed lathe has to tell!
