I always find a sense of serenity when I am at Freetown State Forest. I feel like all the negative things people focus on when they explore this place , cloud their ability to see themselves surrounded by the beauty that is there. It's a beautiful place to explore with a guarded , open mind. The scenic views from many trails and Assonet Ledge are picturesque and even in the rain , it's a beautiful place to explore. I have spent a significant amount of time researching this location and it's surroundings, it's history and it's folklore. I have heard and read about so many terrible things that have mysteriously occured in this forest and the murders , suicides and mysterious deaths. I read and have visited what remains of profile rock. I am not disputing what has occured here is tragic , sad and mysterious. I know more than many will ever know in their current lives or lives to come about the paranormal and most of what it entails , I've personally experienced first hand. There is mystery in the unknown , but sometimes fear comes with the mysterious , so unless those who are curious are also prepared and unafraid , I wouldn't advise visiting places that draw you there to investigate things people may not be...
Read moreFor dirtbike riders: The easier side (the one accessed directly from the parking lot) is one of the most enjoyable moderate difficulty loops in New England. The harder side (accross the street from the parking lot (is one of the longest and endurance demanding routes in New England, it's without a doubt the most technical long trail (legal) trail in NE, with only shorter sections of other state forests winning in intensity, but, not duration of intensity (Tolland state forest - "the ledges" comes to mind for short but intense legal trail sections).
I have arrived at Freetown SF multiple times expecting to do the long tough loop first and then finish up with the short loop (to complete the whole park). No way! The long loop will destroy even the best riders. Don't be afraid, I don't mean destroy from the danger of the terrain, I mean destroy because the trail contains relentless rock gardens and tight sections which require focus, after 20 miles of this you will be destroyed haha! Enjoy! And remember, the trails are one way only (the easier trail runs counter clockwise and the harder trail runs clockwise), look out for the arrows on the tree's at the beginning and...
Read moreFreetown State Forest is a beautiful place to visit and appreciate. its the perfect setting for hiking in the woods. All the locals know about climbing to the top of Profile Rock. The 360° panoramic view allows you to see for miles. Its natural state of gently worn paths from years of appreciative generations guide you to Profile Rock. its vast land is a place to explore with family or friends...an alternative to city life & standing in line to walk through a man-made concrete walk way. You may be fortunate enough to glimpse a deer or other small wild life. Calling it a park does not describe its true identity. This is a huge forest that you would explore and spend hours hiking in & probably wouldnt explore all of its opportunities in a day. Pack a small bag with some snacks & water & give yourself at least a few hours to enjoy the wildlife & many species of birds, plants & trees while they still exist I wouldnt recommend visiting at night. This is where wildlife live & most come out to hunt at night, like coyotes. They wouldnt bother anyone but theres really no point in going at...
