Visited here today with my husband. I have been a few times before in years past but not for several years. This refuge is a great place to see birds and get some exercise. There are a number of paths/trails that wind through this large refuge and people enjoy walking, jogging and biking. I noticed a number of families with children and the kids seemed to have a good time running around playing. The refuge is located right next to the Dumbarton Bridge on San Francisco Bay. Pathways wind along the bay and marshlands with bridges crossing the sloughs. This is a remarkable place because it is an urban refuge and is a very important place for migrating waterfowl. Cars are crossing the Dumbarton Bridge and the surrounding cities are close by but the traffic noise does not seem to detract from the peace and beauty of this place. I came here for birdwatching and was not disappointed. There were a number of shorebirds and waterfowl, as well as birds of prey. Be sure to bring binoculars and spotting scope if you have them for easier viewing. There are benches all along the paths so you can stop and relax. We so enjoyed the fresh breezes coming off of the bay. The refuge features a small visitor center with some exhibits and books for sale. There are also some guided walks offered if you check their website. We walked at least a few miles, looked at the wildlife and enjoyed the weather. This made for a great day. The access is easy (off Hwy. 84 and Thornton Road near the cities of Newark and Fremont). There is plenty of parking. If you get the chance come see this wildlife refuge...
Read moreIf you like being out doors near the bay, this is an excellent place to go. Located at the east end of the Dumbarton bridge, in an area of low pills and marshes. The visitors center is small, but staffed by interested and friendly staff. Behind the visitors center, there are board walkways that allow you to explore the marsh lands. If you keep you eyes open, you will spot a wide variety of birds. Drive or walk a little bit west and you will find more parking on the left. From there, again, there are paved and board walkways leading to the Bay. There are raised boardwalks that go about 100 meters out into the ponds. Again, an excellent place for bird watching or enjoying the views. If you continue West from this area, you will drive parallel to CA 84 to reach the Dumbarton fishing pier. Another beautiful view point with excellent views. Parking and entrance is free. Hours are...
Read moreHesitant to share, because this place is the Bays best kept secret. This place is the perfect place to do some trail running or biking. This is my go-to park to show people the (East) Bay. The hike is not strenuous and there are beautiful views. The boardwalk and history make this place special. There is no entrance fee and yet you can easily bike or run into Coyote Hills via the bridge over the Dumbarton Bridge. Plenty of parking and great source of information of hikes and parks in the Visitors Center. Bathrooms and drinking water also available at the Visitors Center, even on Mondays when...
