Sundays are for hiking trips. So take only memories, leave nothing behind but footprints. Mission Peak Regional Preserve is an open space featuring a steep hiking trail with sweeping valley & bay views from the summit. The distance from the parking lot to the Mission Peak Pole is 6.1 miles with steady steep incline. At 2,517 feet, Mission Peak towers over the southern part of the Bay area. It offers a breathtaking panoramic view from San Jose to Mt Tamalpais. It was my first time hiking this trail and it was very strenuous going up even for an experienced hiker like myself. My heart rate is consistent at 114 bpm. The trails were very wide and with very little to no tree shades. So bring SPF 50 sunscreen and plenty of water. After 2 hrs of hiking, I arrived at the Mission Peak Pole (Summit). Going down was relatively easy and less time consuming; it took me ~40 mins jogging. As I approached the exit gate, I raised my hands and shouted “Finally! I did It.”’ A lovely young white woman, congratulated me! And had a lil chat. Anyways, my experience hiking this trail was utterly challenging but it was worth it. Be prepared to spend 3 hrs (round trip) doing the trail. Parking lot was bloody small and limited. However, plenty of street parking a block from the parking lot. My heart is still pounding as I finish this review. Overall, it’s a strenuous hike albeit good given the view it offers from the summit. I...

Advice( saves you a lot of money: $80): Please see the sign boards if you are parking on the street outside the trails parking lot. If you park your car in the board zone they fine you $80 no question asked. I saw some white slip and curiously looked why those cars in certain areas have that. Then realized that those were not parking spots during weekend. Parking inspector lady was walking to each cars and putting those tickets in those cars. I felt pretty bad for those hikers cause they will come back after a great hike and find out that they been charged $80 as a parking ticket :( Its gonna get crazy in the weekend for the parking but weekdays its okay I guess.
Warning apart, It is a unique hike not only because of its height but also it is open(no trees) and super safe( lots of people in the trail). All kinds of people from kids to seniors and people from all walk of life can be encountered here: some with their dogs whereas some with their loved ones. Some running without clothes, some with hiking poles. Some with determination, some without any goals Some with responsibility, some with no definite roles (wow that makes a little peom, not a poet though)
The hike is great and beautiful no doubt about that but another amazing thing you can see is sky full of Awesome paragliders🪂🪂🪂. What a beauty😍 I wish I could...
Read moreReal endurance testing trail on the mountains of east Bay. I and my colleague (both 78 years young) were warned and recommended against venturing. However it was my fourth time (after a gap of six years) and enjoyed the strain doing it. This time around it took us 200 minutes going up the approx 2400 feet elevation, trundling through 5km of distance.
We stopped many times to catch our breath and savour the unfolding sceneries at different heights. The final half km is very dangerous with tiny pebbles likely to skid you down. Be very very careful please. And coming down this stretch is even more dangerous. It's narrow and slippery. (I hope the authorities will do something to make this stretch better for trekking. Because, in case of emergency, there's no way one can seek help at this point). Our return trip down took us 120 minutes. (When I was ten years younger, first time, I did the entire trip in under four hours. I was 68 then!)
Some advice: Please carry at least one litre of drinking water with you. And sip just a little at a time, to conserve. No trees, no reat rooms on the trail, except at the trail head. Don't forget caps (wide brims better),...
