It's a great place! It's very much a community oriented park with multiple sports opportunities but I go for the disc golf. I really like the two disc golf courses that are there.
My only complaint would be that the folks who have taken on the responsibility of maintaining the course, rather than focusing on "growing the sport" (which has been the PDGA mantra for about ten years or so) tend to treat the DG courses as their own private playground.
What I'm referring to is that, rather than making it more "user friendly" for the newer players starting out by making the tee to basket distances shorter they tend to put the baskets farther away from the tees once THEY get used to the pin positions to make it more challenging for themselves.
NOT a shot at anybody or even a major criticism but in the almost ten years I've played there and seen the new pin positions sprout up here and there not one of them has been put in a position that would benefit beginners who are just starting out. Or even players that can't throw 400 feet.
With that said, I DEFINITELY recommend playing there and I LOVE playing the back course even though I'm a bogey making machine back there. It's a completely different course than the front in regards to the types of shots you will have to make. It's much more of a wooded type of course than the front.
Players BEWARE if playing the back 18 during the summer, it's called Rattlesnake for a REASON! Just keep your eyes open...
Read moreRonnie Van Zant Memorial Park is an absolute gem of a memorial park located in Lake Asbury, and it's a true testament to the memory of Ronnie Van Zant, the iconic Lynyrd Skynyrd vocalist. The park is a multifaceted wonderland with something for everyone.
From the touching memorials to Ronnie and his family to the nature walk and the thrilling Frisbee disc golf, it's a place that beautifully balances reflection and recreation. The multiple playground areas provide endless fun for kids, and the park even has an exercise area resembling a parkour obstacle course, keeping the little ones engaged and active.
One standout feature is the zipline, a constant source of joy for children who eagerly line up for their turn. It's heartwarming to see such enthusiasm.
Weekends at Ronnie Van Zant Park are buzzing with activity, reflecting its popularity among the community. The only minor setback is the condition of the grassy areas, particularly between the playgrounds near the restrooms, which have some worn patches and fire ant mounds that can be problematic for the little ones.
Just be aware that ongoing construction near the entrance might make the signage a bit less visible. Despite these minor inconveniences, we absolutely adore this park and playground. It's a wonderful tribute and a fantastic place for family fun...
Read moreFairly large park. Has a big jungle gym structure for older kids (they have closed the large slides due to misuse) as well as a smaller play structure specifically for toddlers. They are spaced pretty far apart. The larger play area has a pretty cool zip line (yes im an adult, yes i go on the zip line every time). They also have an activity pad with different obstacle course style equipment and a section with drums and chimes. There is also a pond towards the back of the park with a bunch of different species of duck. No large piles of trash but there is a little debris on the ground. Looks like several years of discarded candy wrappers and small trash. Really great park over all. I haven't been in the bathroom but there is one available. They've also got what I'm pretty sure is disc golf baskets? I'm guessing that's what they are cuz I see bros practicing with them by chucking Frisbees in the baskets. There is a big open space that I think is for unofficial team sports like that. I don't go on that side so don't know specifics of bro culture.. but everyone is friendly. I've never seen it totally empty but I have seen it packed with people, gets busier as the day goes on. Usually, it is most quiet in...
