South Carolina is the second largest producer of peaches in the United States of America, second only to California. The peach tower, which holds 1,000,000 gallons of water, was Steel Tank of the year in 1991. Over the years we have visited the Peachoid, and we have seen the area change. The peach water tower used to stand on an open field. We would park behind the Fatz restaurant and walk over to play at the peach, read the monument, and enjoy the fresh air and open space. In more recent years, sadly due to vandalism, the Gaffney Board of Public Works decided to erect a fence around Milkwood Park. Landscaping was added, and there are even picnic tables now. The park is clean and well maintained. It is said to be open during daylight hours, though we have been there to find the gate locked. We are sharing pictures from 2011, 2012, and 2023. You can see different colors of the peach from front to back and from year to year, and you may notice no fence in our older pictures. Who's ever heard of a SC peach? I thought the best were from GA. I guess I was wrong... We're been wanting to stop and see the giant peach for many years. Finally had time today while on our way to NC. What a fun roadside attraction! Appreciated that it was easy off the HWY on to the service road and then back on the 85 with no time lost on our journey. The peach was looking very fresh, possibly just painted or washed. The grass and monuments were well taken care of. Enjoyed reading the nearby plaques explaining the significance and history of the peach. Very strange that the gate for vehicles was locked when we arrived but easy enough to park at the nearby eating establishment and walk through the open pedestrian gate. Would love to see the addition of: Snack/vending machine Bathroom facilities Dog park/fenced in area & doggie bags Hard to realize from the road just how large and tall this water tank is. 100% would recommend at least once coming to check out the peach...
