Sea Shell Beach - Pocket Park #3 — Attraction in Galveston

8/26/23 Beware the black tar-like substance all over the beach- most likely some type of crude oil?? We didn’t notice it till after being there a few hours and saw a few “ smudges on feet, shoes and towels. Than realized little bits of it are all over the sand. Greasy mess! Otherwise, the location was nice, easy to get to and park right on sand. But this stuff does not come off! And sun melts it and makes it worse! Ruined a pop up canopy, some shoes and clothing. I had high hopes for this beach but they were unfortunately let down. There was nothing but a bunch of cigarette butts and plastic on this beach. I think my standards may just be a bit high as I come from a country with impecable beaches. I did get 3 shells which was the whole reason I came here but there was no where to park which made life a bit difficult. Overall I wouldn't recommend this beach to anyone, maybe I just came...

The pocket parks in Galveston are not worth their cost. By driving just a bit further out to the west end of the island you can get free beach access and most times you have the entire area to yourself! The public beaches further out do have houses very close, however many are vacation homes and often have the hurricane shutters down leaving you with a more 'private'...
