My family has been enjoying this park weekly for the past 16 years. The trails are beautiful, and we come across fantastic wildlife. It's a haven for wildlife photographers and nature lovers. Here's why I'm docking two stars. According to signs near the parking lot, a "no pets" rule exists in order to preserve the natural setting and not scare off wildlife. I would like to believe that Yates Mill has rules to preserve the safety of its human patrons too. Lately, the staff is not enforcing its "no pets" rule. For the 45 minutes I use the trails each day, I'm seeing about two dogs. It was never this way before Covid. Never saw a dog. The dogs are clearly not service animals (which are allowed) based on their behavior. For example, last week a large pit-bull mix growled and snarled at me. Today a German shepherd mix had to be restrained as I walked by. The trails are narrow so it's hard to pass aggressive dogs like those two. The owners can be just as aggressive about their perceived rights; they outright lie about the purpose of their animals. Service dogs are much better trained than what I see on the trails at Yates Mill. Even the fluffy little dog running around sniffing the ground and barking at squirrels is not exhibiting service dog training. I'm very disappointed that people feel entitled to break the rules in higher frequency since Covid. Second, I'm disappointed that the staff at Yates Mill is not patrolling the trails and enforcing their rules. What's the point of rules when you don't enforce them? Yates Mill is in a culture lag and needs to get out there and deal with culture's new sense of self-entitlement or this park will cease being a nature preserve. I now carry...

ย ย ย Read moreI appreciate that this place is free. Although that seems like a standard, it is really annoying every time you are looking for a place to shoot photos and there is a fee. I don't even mind having to register because it makes sense to keep track of who's using the facilities and be aware of the rules...anyway, this place is pretty good. I do have to be honest, I hyped myself up for this place and it turned out to be alright. So take my opinion with a grain of salt.
My favorite angle is when you can see the pond/lake at a certain height and it's all flat, then ends at a waterfall (see photo). The place where you would take pictures with the mill is not cramped so it's still good for higher focal lengths. Shade is not that consistent so that's something you have to consider with placing your subjects. I like this place and that's just it, like not love. It delivers what it advertises for, you get a mill and a body of water nearby. I'd definitely find myself here again for a small photo shoot, but I can't see pulling off several scenes...
