Lake Wheeler Park is very pretty with nice facilities, and well maintained. There are picnic areas, playgrounds, a fishing dock, clean restrooms, and lots of green space. I have to give the place only 2 stars though because as a boater/fisherman, I have a problem with the boat ramps.

There are 5 boat ramps which seems like a good thing until you realize that the ramps bring your boat in at least 10 feet away from the docks. Instead of being parallel and close to the ramp, the docks actually even further diverge away from the ramp. This means that it's difficult for one person to launch a boat from a trailer because he/she has to back the trailer in, release the boat, and then wade in thru rocky, slippery water to push the boat all the way over next to the dock to tie the boat off before returning the trailer to parking. In other words, you can't just back your boat up into the water next to the dock and then tie it off like every other boat ramp in the world. Who dreamed this access up? Somebody who doesn't know boating evidently. I've put boats in at Harris, Jordan, and Falls Lake as well as the ICW and never encountered anything like this weird setup. If you don't have a second person to power the boat off and on the trailer while the other one backs the trailer in and out of the water, you're just SOL. To make matters worse, Lake Wheeler staff evidently allow folks to tie up boats to the dock and leave them there indefinitely which means that that dock can't be used for launching any boats, at least other than small craft. I saw one boat tied up to the west dock there right near the end of the ramp for at least 3 hours. Too bad. The young park staff seemed really nice and polite but clueless about this issue. Not really a boater...

Lake Wheeler Park is a relaxing hideaway in Raleigh that combines natural beauty with recreational activities. Nestled by a tranquil lake, the park offers a laid-back atmosphere that encourages guests to unwind and enjoy the outdoors. Lake Wheeler Park, with its scenic views and well-kept grounds, is a perfect place for families, nature enthusiasts, and anybody wishing to get away from the rush and bustle of daily life. Boating is one of Lake Wheeler Park's most popular activities. The park offers boat rentals, allowing guests to explore the tranquil waterways at their own pace. Whether you like kayaking, canoeing, or simply enjoying a tranquil paddle on a beautiful day, the lake provides a fun experience for all ages. Fishing aficionados will love the opportunity to cast a line from the shore or a hired boat, with a variety of fish available for catching and releasing. The park has family-friendly facilities, including picnic spots that are ideal for a relaxed supper by the water. Shaded tables and grills make it easy to have a picnic while taking in the scenery. Lake Wheeler Park, with its meandering walking pathways and plenty of open area for children to play, is a wonderful alternative for families wishing to spend quality time together in a beautiful and serene setting. This park offers a great outdoor experience, whether you're boating, fishing, or simply...

Went for a family reunion and I’d definitely recommend it!

Fam reserved one of the rental shelters, which was perfect for our get‑together... shaded, spacious, and conveniently located near the lake. The views across the water were absolutely stunning, especially as the light changed throughout the day. It was gorgeous in terms of scenery and atmosphere.

The bathrooms were clean and well‑maintained, which made a big difference with kids running back and forth. The playground we passed seemed like it could use some updating - parts were worn and looked in need of repair, so keep that in mind if you’re counting on it for younger children.

All in all - we felt great vibes the entire time: relaxing, scenic, and family‑friendly. If I ever find myself back in this area, I’d love to actually get out on the lake and enjoy some time on the water - maybe paddle boating or kayaking would be a fun way to experience it next time.

Highlights: Beautiful lake views. Clean, well‑kept facilities. Great for family gatherings. Minor drawback: Playground could use some TLC.

Would happily return - a lovely spot for nature, relaxation,...

A beautiful park with some lovely shady trails. Too bad there weren't very many and they weren't very long because it would have been really nice to walk a few more paths around the lake. It was really disappointing to find out that you aren't able to access the water of lake Wheeler by banks. There were so many signs posted telling us what we could not do that it was rather depressing. Not really sure why you aren't able to wade even at easily accessible more beach-like areas, but it was rather sad to be so close to the nice water and not at least be able to dip our toes in. I'm sure there's some rule about water safety or something, but it seemed a bit arbitrary when we're watching people drive around with motorized boats towing inflatable rafts filled with little people bouncing around. Obviously they're in the water but we couldn't even wade??? Oh well it's still a nice park to walk around even with the fairly arbitrary rules and limited paths.

A lovely place for a crisp autumn stroll. ...or really, any time you want to enjoy a bit of nature and the water. This is an easy drive for the South Raleigh and Cary area and makes for a chill 30-45 minutes out if you just need a change of pace. There are plenty of benches and picnic shelters here for your next grill and gathering event, a little space for fishing, and all this wonderful lake for rowing. It's also a fantastic place to bring your children if you need them to run out some of their energy (there's a playground section and plenty of opportunity for you to explain how trees and leaves and nature works). That being said, on the less busy days it's also a serves as an escape for peace and calm.
