Chestnut Top Trailhead — Attraction in Gatlinburg

In August 2023, we took a road trip through the Great Smoky Mountains, and this particular spot was one of the highlights. We arrived in the late morning, just before noon, and were pleasantly surprised to find it peaceful and uncrowded. The kids played in the cool, refreshing water while we soaked in the serenity around us.

There’s something truly special about this place…almost magical. The beauty of the landscape, the quiet hum of nature, and the gentle flow of water created the perfect setting for a complete reset. The Chestnut Top trail connects the Schoolhouse Gap trail to the Townsend Wye. An easy hike with great views of Thunder Head and other peaks on the main ridge. Why Google calls it Chestnut Hill is a mystery to me. It is called Chestnut Top on park maps, topo maps and trail signs. Go figure...

Not nearly as scenic as we were expecting and be aware that it is a long uphill climb. While we don't mind the climb and you will get up there rather quickly, so it's good exercise with some nice points.
