We drove 2 hours from Dallas to check out this park. We were mainly interested in hiking and paddle boarding the water. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the gate (gentleman with long white hair and a long white beard) attendant who was not the friendliest. We were not informed of the process to pay for entrance before arrival. As he explained this to us there were 2 options: 1) you MUST scan QR code and pay the $5.00 fee for entrance 2) or park outside the gate and walk to the trailhead. He also explained Sundays are busy, and there is no parking available. As we were deciding our next move, he said, “well what do you want to do? I have a line of people I need to get through here.” I honestly don’t care about the people behind me. They can wait, just as I did. We decided to take our chances and pay the entrance fee. We asked if he had a map. He said, “sure, but it won’t do you any good.” As he handed us the map, and hurriedly pushed us along before we could finish paying.
We drove down to the boat ramp, and parked in a marked parking space big enough for a vehicle and trailer. As my fiancé got out of the car to obtain the license plate (information needed to complete online payment for entrance) an unknown man barked at him, “You can’t park there!” There were no signs prohibiting parking, and the map given had posted rules on the other side in which the only rule of parking is a vehicle cannot park on the grass.
We moved on to check out the picnic areas. There were tons of covered picnic tables next to the water, restrooms, and plenty of parking.
We then went to the trail. This area was limited on parking, but we had no problem finding a spot. The map we were handed, in fact, was not helpful. There are also no maps at the trailhead. I had to use an app, AllTrails, to get a better comprehension on the layout of the trail. The trail is not well maintained nor marked at all: dog excrements everywhere, found a pair of boxers hanging in a tree, and trash. It is very rocky terrain of Limestone; bring adequate shoes for you and your dog. The trail can get narrow, and we encountered several visitors with their dog off leash. Mine was leashed, and the courtesy of following the leash law from others would have been appreciated. Plenty of water is essential! There are quite a few off beaten paths you can take which take you down to the lake, worth the extra steps. The views, at times, are photo worthy. Don’t forget your sunscreen and bug spray.
We never made it to paddle boarding. The trail is much longer than anticipated
Side note: The bathrooms are AWFUL. The doors don’t lock, the water is off, no hand soap, the water fountains provided are inoperable, and there is no toilet paper.
This is a national park. I would expect better integrity and care of the property. I think I’ll stick to state funded parks. I’ve had much...
Read moreI came here with my dog for our last camping adventure together before I have to put him down. After my most recent stay I will not be coming back sadly.
There was a strange man who was not camping but somehow knew the code to the gate to get in. He drove in, parked at an empty campsite proceeded to go beyond the roped off section near the water’s edge, behind my campsite to watch the sunset. Not the biggest ordeal - however the way he was watching me afterwards from his car had me on edge. Luckily other campers saw his behavior and also agreed he was acting very suspicious. Bless the man who was camping a few spots down, who offered to go to the camp host to explain the situation however the camp host was not there at the time. Shortly after sunset the suspicious man left the campground. Safe to say my dog and I did not stay the night and we left.
I looked for a way to reach out to the campground but also think it’s important for other campers to be aware of this. With young children being at this campground I do not want anyone to be at risk and hope the campground sees this review so they can be aware of the situation.
One other small note I would like to add is the campground is lovely and landscape is well taken care of. I appreciate the individuals who take care of the campground.
However, I did ask the mowers politely to not come too close to my vehicle as I had an elderly dog resting in the backseat (I did not want my dog to be on edge by the sound of the mower, it is quite loud, as we were tent/mostly car camping). The mower proceeded to get right up against our vehicle after I politely asked him not to come too close. He asked when a good time to come back, I told him the time we were leaving but it did not matter as he ignored that information and continued to come close to our vehicle.
Photos posted are of the suspicious man’s vehicle (white sedan). As well as the mower who I wish would have been more respectful, please note that the photo is not zoomed in. That is how close they mowed near my dog and I in the back of our vehicle. Please note that a lot of dust, dirt, and debris gets kicked up by these larger mowers and with it so close to us it was not quite pleasant.
Very unfortunate as this was my last adventure with my dog before I put him down. Sadly, will not be coming...
Read moreWorst and most Horrible experience of my life. Left in tears. First visit for a friend drove all the way from austinTexas and didn't know where to park to see the view of the lake and the watch sunrise. A man drove up in a maroon SUV honking the horn continuosly and scared us with irratic anger. Uniform beige jacket with a badge of some sort gets out of the car and aggressively yells at the top of his lungs what the hell are we doing. Asked us if we can read and said there were three signs that said no parking in the grass and ordered us to leave the park immediately and threatened us if he saw our vehicle he was calling a tow truck to be around to tow it . I am a mother my friend and I are both educated women we did not deserve to be treated with the lack of respect and unwelcoming demeanor . We were never given the chance to say one word and as we were leaving trying to navigate to the exit in shock and stricten with emotion the man wearing a park jacket and a maroon SUV drove around us and tried to ram into us and run us off the road. it was frightening and felt very disturbing as to being the welcome of a new place and unaware of where or why. This is unfair and unjust. We were so scared at the anger and agression there were no one around to help. We thought this was possibly someome who didnt work there with intentions to harm us and feared for our lives and safety. This was my first time here and i have never been treated like this. He was so mean. We are...
