This is the historic cupola that topped the Cockspur Island Lighthouse. The cupola protected the powerful Fresnel lens at the top of the lighthouse tower. In 1995, preservation staff discovered several structural cracks in the cupola and removed it from the lighthouse. A reproduction cupola now crowns the historic lighthouse.

Read moreThis lighthouse is accessible from Fort Pulaski's lighthouse trail. By foot, it is about a half hour to the lighthouse and a half hour back. The walk is easy (all flat) along the cleared path and you see plenty of small crabs and spiders along the way. You can't get too close to the lighthouse itself, but be sure to go at low tide as you can get closer which is what we did. If you go during high tide you will be kept back...

From afar during low tide this lighthouse looks like it's sitting on a pile of rocks. During high tide it looks like it's sitting on top of the river.
