We only found this place because all of the small towns we visited on our three-county Sunday jaunt had nothing open. Well, nothing open that wasn't a corporate mess hall or a fast food joint.
To get here the first time, you'll think your navigation device is punking you. When the tarmac ends with three miles to go, you'll really begin wondering. Just keep going, because it's worth it.
The lodge is nice, natural wood. There's a front desk for the shooting sports part in the great hall. The dining room is in the back left quadrant of the building (if you came in the front).
Incredibly welcoming and friendly folks. My lady always is nicely dressed, but I tend towards cargo shorts, a Filson shirt, and flip flops. As we pulled up and parked, I asked her if she would get take out for me if they wouldn't let me in. Pfft. Nobody was dressed like a hobo, but nobody was wearing a cravat and foxing hat, either. We sat and ordered some libations.
To begin our lunch, we shared a bowl of beer cheese and sausage soup. Get this. Get your own bowl. Smooth, tangy, and cheesy, this soup had nice chunks of fresh celery and sausage.
My lady had fish tacos, which she enjoyed. I had a Reuben, and it was outstanding. She had onion rings that she smacked her lips about and I had fairly standard french fries, nuclear hot and fresh.
Open about a year and a half, this place is a hidden gem. It's worth a drive for a relaxing afternoon of cold drinks and good food. The views are nice (I'll post pictures) and you can watch shooters wing clay pigeons (or miss them...I ain't judging, because I hit about 1/3 or 1/4 of the ones I've shot at).
You can rent a shotgun, buy ammo, and try it for yourself. Or just hang out on the huge covered back porch and drink some.
There's a large yard with corn hole boards, open space, and a fire pit with Adirondack rocking chairs. All in all, an unqualified 5 star experience. Venture forth and find it...

Read moreI took the day off last Friday to start my BirthWeek off at Garland with my girlfriends. Even though we arrived to a torrential downpour of rain, we had an awesome experience! We started with a delicious meal thanks to Nadia our fabulous server, who asked the kitchen if they could had some lunch to our breakfast menu. The loaded tater tots and fried green tomatoes as appetizers were soooo good! Then I split a BBQ burger w/ an egg on it. The portions are large and the chef did a great job. Once the rain stopped we hit the range. I had three first timers at Garland with me and accidentally took them to the intermediate course. I myself have never been to Garland without my boyfriend so I easily was lost following the map :) but I was the birthday girl! The clay was flying fast as I was getting my friends acclimated to the whole experience of a gun, safety and shooting. After we all went through a few shots, I waived down a guy who was on a tractor to ask if we were on the beginners course and he said no. I was not surprised. He then gave me directions and offered to lead us to the Robin trail. Richard helped us so much! What a nice guy to help a group of 4 girls, in getting set up and offer us tips that we really needed. He went above and beyond to make their first visit to Garland for all of us memorable! In fact it was something we talked about for hours afterwards and planning our next trip on Friday. We will be bringing a large group of first timers to shoot and eat!! Thank you Richard for educating us girls on sporting clay and sparking our desire to get competitive while...
