This is a great, out of the way destination. The trails offer lots to see. There is a diverse bird population and you're sure to see alligators! The trails move you through a wide variety of ecosystems, from forest to grassland and marine to desert-like. The trails are fairly level with few obstacles and it can take a while if you want to explore them all. It took us 3 hours, 18 minutes to cover 8.75 miles at a leisurely pace. There are several places to park your car to look at the scenery. Having walked the trails, I would recommend a bike as the best way to see the refuge. It would be an easy ride. As a former airman I was especially intrigued by the way nature has reclaimed what was once an aerial gunnery training facility for WWII fighter pilots. There is plenty of evidence...

So if you are expecting something like the Savannah Wildlife Refuge driving trail, YOU WILL BE GREATLY DISAPPOINTED!! We drove two hours expecting just that, because the Savannah refuge is closed for habitat remodeling.

If you are looking to hike, this place would be perfect for you.

I can see the potential, and we did see a gator head in the water and several armadillos. But due to my expectations, we didn't have as good of a time as I hoped.

The entire purpose of this particular review is to ensure that no one ever drives 2 hours in South Carolina and Georgia traffic to get to something they think is like the Savannah Wildlife...

What an amazing biking wildlife experience! A generous and knowledgeable ranger shared with us which ponds were filled for management of species. Her recommendation s proved perfect. We watched an immense rookery of Wood Storks with all associated animals from a levee for over one hour. We saw Great Blue Heron, Little Blue Heron, Shiny Ibis, Great White Egret, Tricolor Heron, Snowy Egret, Black Capped Night Heron, Marsh Hen, Summer Tanager, Black Vulture, White Ibis, Roseate Spoonbill, an armadillo, and alligators. We heard the White Eyed Vireo and the American Coot....

Wow!!! What a beautiful place to visit. This wildlife refuge is just that...it is free and would have been more than happy to pay a fee. You have the option to drive thru which is what we preferred considering there are animals present, like alligators who are native to coastal Georgia. You have to be alert and drive less than 10 to15 miles per hour to actually see animals in their natural habitat. Have your camera ready or you will miss a photo op, which happened to me quite often. So many beautiful trees. We loved it. If you love nature this is a place you must visit.

This is an amazing place to visit if you have the chance!! Self guided tour through the Refuge. So much history here to learn about. We saw a small alligator while visiting. We were able to find the abandoned reflecting pond and fountain. I highly recommend bringing a walking stick if you have one. As well as sunblock, bugspray, and plenty of water! Make sure to watch for spiders and their webs while also keeping your eyes open for the alligators. I would definitely visit again if given the chance to see more of what we missed the first visit through.

A good mix of wetland and forest, there is a lot to see here, especially if you get out of your car and walk the trails. During the nesting season, Woody Pond is wondrous, full of all kinds of nesting wading birds including Wood Storks, Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets, and assorted herons. There are also plenty of Alligators to see around the ponds. Away from the ponds, there seems to be a healthy population of Wild Turkeys and Whitetail Deer. This is a terrific place to visit for any lover of nature and wildlife.
