This is a great, out of the way destination. The trails offer lots to see. There is a diverse bird population and you're sure to see alligators! The trails move you through a wide variety of ecosystems, from forest to grassland and marine to desert-like. The trails are fairly level with few obstacles and it can take a while if you want to explore them all. It took us 3 hours, 18 minutes to cover 8.75 miles at a leisurely pace. There are several places to park your car to look at the scenery. Having walked the trails, I would recommend a bike as the best way to see the refuge. It would be an easy ride. As a former airman I was especially intrigued by the way nature has reclaimed what was once an aerial gunnery training facility for WWII fighter pilots. There is plenty of evidence...
   Read moreSo if you are expecting something like the Savannah Wildlife Refuge driving trail, YOU WILL BE GREATLY DISAPPOINTED!! We drove two hours expecting just that, because the Savannah refuge is closed for habitat remodeling.
If you are looking to hike, this place would be perfect for you.
I can see the potential, and we did see a gator head in the water and several armadillos. But due to my expectations, we didn't have as good of a time as I hoped.
The entire purpose of this particular review is to ensure that no one ever drives 2 hours in South Carolina and Georgia traffic to get to something they think is like the Savannah Wildlife...

We watched an immense rookery of Wood Storks with all associated animals from a levee for over one hour. We saw Great Blue Heron, Little Blue Heron, Shiny Ibis, Great White Egret, Tricolor Heron, Snowy Egret, Black Capped Night Heron, Marsh Hen, Summer Tanager, Black Vulture, White Ibis, Roseate Spoonbill, an armadillo, and alligators.
