What an amazing visit we had!! The location is beautiful, old fort Jackson sits on the Savannah river. You will meet the most friendly, informative staff. They will tell you so much information that time will pass quickly as you take it in, you may even want to go back to learn more soon! They have demonstrations of weapon firings and cannon firings. It is a real treat to witness, they provide ear and eye safety for all visitors. You may be lucky enough to see the riverboat cruising from here! If you've done that cruise it is so cool to see it from a new angle. If not, the riverboat is beautiful on its own and an added visual perk. For bird watchers we saw American Eagles and Terns during our visit. When you arrive, slow down and take in this wonderful site slowly. It is not a large fort, to me that is what made it so special. Thank you to everyone who works hard to keep these historic sites alive for generations to experience. To the 2 soldiers at the fort today you knocked it out...
Read moreAn unexpected and amazing time. The guide and soldier that hosted the tour was the best part. He was a younger gentleman and dawned what appeared to be an authentic uniform of the time period. He gave a very informative tour and history lesson of the fort and surrounding area. He interacted with the children of the group, allowed them to partake in certain aspects of the tour and had a great sense of humor. At the end we were allowed to witness a firing of the cannon inside the fort. The gentleman inside was also very kind and they gave us a discount due to a show being filmed on site. I would gladly pay the original price if it went to the guide. The young man giving the tour not once complained of the heat and the uniform he was wearing even though we all saw him suffering deep inside. I applaud their dedication and I hope the management pays him well. Outstanding job and...
Read moreThis is a really great place! The day we visited, the winds topped 40+ mph, but we still immensely enjoyed ourselves! It's right on the river, of course, and the views are fabulous from up top, as well as from the river's edge! You may get lucky enough to see some HUGE BOATS go by! The history of the fort is very interesting and the interactive interpretative program (don't miss it!) was lots of fun. The cannons are fired several times a day, too. It's a great place for kids, as there is plenty of room for them to run around and be kids, although you would need to keep a close eye on them since there are so many nooks and crannies and they could be out of sight in a heartbeat. I've toured a lot of forts along the GA coast and I think this one was my favorite. Note: there are restrooms inside the little cabin where you enter, as well as in the corner to the right of the...
