Rented a house here for Thanksgiving 2018. We rented through VRBO. The couple who owned the house was awesome. As for the island, it was a refreshing break from society. You are able to get away from people and have your own beach. I mean that literally. We walked down the beach and we had it to ourselves for three hours a day we were there. The plantation house that is able to be rented is expensive but looks like it would be worth it for a venue of some sort (i.e wedding, family/friend reunion, etc). There are less than 100 inhabitants on the entire island which is about the size of Manhattan and the ones that we met were very friendly. Many of the inhabitants of the island are direct decedents of the slaves that worked the plantation before the civil war. They have a very interesting story and rich culture. If you are a hunter the wildlife is abundant and during deer season there are open WMA areas that are archery only. The North end of the island is wilderness area and has a Quota hunt once a year. I highly recommend this...

There is much to be desired however in terms of maps, tours, roads, access & greater user friendliness. If you're a younger person, knock yourself out but older folk would be hard pressed to adventure much of this on foot or by bicycle alone. Mountain bikes a recommendation. Sapelo is a strange mix of opportunity but lack of visitor infrastructure or overall resources once there. My impression is that as much as the DNR, WMA, etc are "helping" the island, they're somehow stagnating it to death. Something essential is missing and it's rather puzzling considering what...
Read moreAt the right time of year you have almost the entire island to yourself. You must carry most of your own food as there is only a small general store on the island. Very few motorized vehicles and all activities are wild life based. Great surf fishing. I caught some whiting and some black drum. Really enjoyed our trip and will definitely be back. Francine Bailey is the caretaker for the Bird House Cottages and went above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable. If you go, I feel you will fall in love with this place as we did. Great bird watching. Check a few more species...
