2020-Feb. update. The main dirt entry road (Skull Shoals Road) off Macedonia is open again and you can drive right up to the site. The site was mowed and easy to explore. The River was very high and some areas of the site were soggy. Still a fun place to explore and you now don’t have to hike 2 miles to get in. June 2019 review: First, if you take Scull Shoals Road you will get stopped by a concrete barrier and have to walk 2.1 miles to the site. Go further up Macedonia Rd and turn on Moore Rd and you can drive right up to the site. The site is a “ruins site” so don’t expect buildings. The grass was overgrown when we visited but that could be a seasonal thing. The site has a map of the building, but no actual signs by the buildings. It was cool to walk around imaging how they built the site. The milling village next to the Oconee River was established in the late 1700s and abandoned after being flooded in the 19th century. It’s hard to imaging a complete village here. There is an informational board and a nice sport for fishing. Expect to spend an hour here if you are just exploring.

We definitely enjoyed exploring this place. It was really cool to see the old ruins and the whole setting was remote and felt like we were stepping into another world. We explored the surrounding woods and walked down to the river looking for the ruins and whatever else we might find. The map was not to scale and made it difficult to be sure where we were going and what we were seeing. The map has numbers to the ruins but the actual remains are not labeled in any way. The trails were very difficult to walk as most are overgrown and are really just ghosts of trails which I don’t mind at all. Added to the magic of the place. The managers house was so difficult to find we almost gave up - but so worth seeing once we found it! Added bonus we didn’t realize there would be an old well but we found one by the mgr house. We ended up exploring late into the evening and left as the sun was setting. As soon as the sun dropped the whole area filled with fog and it felt so spooky and amazing!! We want to go back and check out the botanical trail and walk back through more of the forest!

This was a really cool place to find! It was definitely an adventure trying to get there. It is in the middle of nowhere down a dirt road. Now be careful cause there are some deep ruts on the road. Cell service is spotty out there so be prepared for that. It was an awesome to see an old part of Georgia History. Stop and read the information about it. Take a picnic lunch with you. Take a book and a blanket. There is not much out there at all. But it is quiet and serene. My husband and I spent about a half hour out there just taking in the nature and seeing the ruins.
