This is such a great, family/locally run little gem that we discovered. I spent a long time talking with various members of the team/family that own and run this attraction while I was there, and they were some of the nicest and humblest people I have had the pleasure of encountering.
The attraction has only been open for around a year, but they have got a pretty good little thing going here.
There is the safari park part of the encounter, where you have the choice of driving your own vehicle around a trail in amongst various animals such as bison, camels, emu, zebras, geese, donkeys, cattle, etc; or you can pay a small fee and ride a tractor "hayride" of sorts through the same trail and have an even more closer encounter!
Once that is done you can for a small fee purchase some feed and go and pet some of the same animals from a lookout type platform, as well as some smaller animals (goats, alpacas, sheep, etc.) In the petting zoo area. There is no time limit, or feeling of pressure to leave either, which was really nice. I was more concerned with my youngest daughter trying to snuggle the goat kid out in her pocket or something as she had fallen in love with it!
There is also another little area with some chicks, rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, spiders (behind glass for those that may be a little scared), etc just past their gift shop further into the same building.
Although they are newer, I think the fact that everything is so down to earth, friendly, and welcoming is a nice change from a lot of places, especially if late. I get the impression, sadly, that there has been some negativity towards the "Dutch" from the locals in the area, which I find a real shame as they are such welcoming and friendly folk!
If you're nearby, and want to do something a little different, a specially if you have preteen kids, this is the place!! Highly recommend, my kids wanted to go back every day we...
Read moreLooking for something new and different to do for Wifey's birthday, we ended up making a trip to Hose Cave, KY, and our first stop was Dutch County Safari Park. I'd driven down I-65 and seen the signs enough to know that it'd be a cool, fun place to visit.
Located no far off of the expressway, Dutch County Safari Park is easy to find (just follow the signs). There isn't so much a grand entrance as there is a road the empties out to the large parking lot.
The admission fee (roughly $18 per person) is reasonable. One the morning we went there were a lot of kids (and associated families), but that's to be expected, given this attraction is family and education based.
The hay ride is the star of this show. You'll be driven by a tractor through the open field. You'll encounter zebras, camels, oxen, ostriches, and many other animals. Each person gets a bowl of feed, and these animals are absolute pros at eating as much as they can as the hay ride slowly makes its way through the park.
There is a petting zoo with goats that's kind of fun. One of them tried to eat one of my show laces.
There are a few indoor exhibits with rabbits and monkeys and a few other animals and a gift shop. It's easy to miss if you don't explore a bit, so keep your eyes open. This attraction is run by an Amish family, and I think that it's rather neat that the offer this to the public.
Our visit lasted a little over an hour and was an hour well spent in the hot July sun. Most of the park is well-shaded, but bring a hat...
Read moreSo our first time we went we left early because WE DID NOT KNOW there was a whole exhibit of the monkeys, birds, and other animals we missed. There was no signage out front directing you to this. But I noticed it on Facebook and decided to come again to find it. Past the feeding/petting zoo there is a sign that is too far back to notice and not very brightly colored to see. This time knowing what I saw online, I trudged back behind and found a whole fish pond, kangaroos, two swing sets, the corn, porcupine, everything we missed the first time!! I told my coworker this morning, she went previously and SHE MISSED ALL OF THIS TOO!! I think it just goes to show people are not exploring everything because it's almost hidden and not properly displayed. I think this would really help visitors to have better signage up. Across the building itself on the front, not a small sign on the door you can't see from the entrance or a 10 ft away. The exhibit sign itself was on the back of the building/door you wouldn't even see had you not been wondering back there to start with.
Went the same day they were serving food and it was amazing! Think it was a little late to open and be ready but I think it was the first time so it's all good. Hot dogs were delicious !
We met some other family up here and they were absolutely amazed, they hadn't really heard of this place. The safari is so much fun every time. Considering getting season passes as my son...
