Amazing. Magical. Beautiful.
When you visit the Sleeping Bear Dunes park you will be amazed by the beautiful scenery, you will think it is magical, you will stop and just look and take in all the glory in all directions.
This is one of the very best places to see in Michigan and the country. What is very special is that the soft sand is arranged in endless bluffs with many peaks and valleys. Then there are beautiful views of Lake Michigan from above ground level to give a deep and far view of the lake, very different from a ground level view of beach water. The views of the clear blue pristine waters of the lake between the sand hills and the sky will make you speechless. You have several beautiful spots in the park to choose to spend time as it is miles long. You will want to spend a whole week there.
There are several small dunes you can climb before you attempt the main one. You do not need to climb down the whole way. Also remember that you can zigzag to make your climb easier. When the sand is slightly wet from a morning rain, you do not slip and it makes it easier to climb.
People that live close by there are very lucky.
If you are a Michigander you must visit this place as it rivals most of the very best destinations in the...

Start with the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive (there is an entrance fee), it is beautiful and surprising to see this beautiful forest right next to dunes. Stop at each view point, ideally you can hike 2 or 3 popular ones with big parking lots. The views of Lake Michigan are breathtaking!
If you want to hike, start with Empire Bluff Trail, it is not too hard and can be done with family/kids and the views are amazing.
If you're in the area, explore other beaches and lighthouses depending on how much time you have (just search on google maps). You can also camp nearby and make it a weekend trip! Weekend trip is doable from Chicago, Indiana or any of the cities from Michigan Lower Peninsula. About 3 and a half hour or so from Detroit. You can also add traverse city while you're there. Definitely...

Beautiful views, lots of sand, crystal water, etc. I'll be honest, the dune climb is no joke. I'm not super athletic anymore, nowhere near my youth and time in the Army. I'm 46 now, i'm not overweight, its just my only exercise now comes from mowing the lawn or shoveling snow. For some reason I decided to venture to the bottom of the big dune, and as soon as I did I realized I had made a mistake. It only took 2 minutes to get to the bottom, but it was 56 of the most excruciating minutes of my life to climb back up. Everything is fighting against you while climbing back up... the height, the steepness and the sand that just seems to keep pulling you down. I'd go again for kayaking, camping, fishing... but never, ever going back down that dune...
