Sleeping Bear Dunes is one of my absolute favorite spots in Michigan. I am forever amazed by the fact that, here, in the heart of the midwest, there can be dunes of this size and magnitude on the shores of lake Michigan. When you explore them for the first time, you feel as if you've been transported to another place - the shores of the pacific ocean or maybe the shores of New England. It is truly an amazing and beautiful environment and I never grow tired of seeing them. Any time I am in this part of Michigan, I make sure that time for a trip to the Dunes is part of my schedule. The Dunes are essentially a national park (technically, they are a "national lakeshore"), so there will be a small entry fee for your vehicle, but there is very large parking lot on site, so there is plenty of parking available. There are restrooms and water fountains available at the base of the Dunes right next to the parking lot. The size of the Dunes truly is amazing and, once you start hiking, it is possible to lose your orientation. The trails are marked throughout the dunes with signposts, but be sure to keep your orientation. Also be sure that each member of yoru party takes a canteen or container of water if you plan to hike into the interior. It is dry and you will get thirsty! If you are visiting this part of Michigan or the Leelanau Peninsula, then you absolutely need to make this one of your stops during your travels....

Read moreWhat a beautiful place! The Lake is huge (and I mean incredibly so) and crystal clear, and the sand is golden soft. Every ranger we met was passionate and friendly, and directed us to the loveliest spots. When you come (and you must come) you have to drive the long, woodsy back road to Peterson Road Beach. You'll think you're lost, but then you'll arrive at this tiny parking lot, and you'll hear the waves. Then, you walk with magical boardwalk, surrounded by vast grasses and tall trees in the distance. And the you'll arrive at the beach. Breathtaking. Most people stayed for the stars at night--and stars there are. Also. the Lake Michigan Overlook is an...
