Sleeping Bear Dunes is one of my absolute favorite spots in Michigan. I am forever amazed by the fact that, here, in the heart of the midwest, there can be dunes of this size and magnitude on the shores of lake Michigan. When you explore them for the first time, you feel as if you've been transported to another place - the shores of the pacific ocean or maybe the shores of New England. It is truly an amazing and beautiful environment and I never grow tired of seeing them. Any time I am in this part of Michigan, I make sure that time for a trip to the Dunes is part of my schedule. The Dunes are essentially a national park (technically, they are a "national lakeshore"), so there will be a small entry fee for your vehicle, but there is very large parking lot on site, so there is plenty of parking available. There are restrooms and water fountains available at the base of the Dunes right next to the parking lot. The size of the Dunes truly is amazing and, once you start hiking, it is possible to lose your orientation. The trails are marked throughout the dunes with signposts, but be sure to keep your orientation. Also be sure that each member of yoru party takes a canteen or container of water if you plan to hike into the interior. It is dry and you will get thirsty! If you are visiting this part of Michigan or the Leelanau Peninsula, then you absolutely need to make this one of your stops during your travels....

Visiting Sleeping Bear Dunes Nature Preserve was an unforgettable experience. The breathtaking scenery, with its vast sand dunes and stunning views of Lake Michigan, makes it a true natural gem. I did some hiking on the various trails, and each one offered unique perspectives of the landscape. The challenging climb up the dunes was well worth it for the panoramic vistas at the top. The trails are well-marked and provide options for all skill levels, making it accessible for everyone. The peaceful surroundings and the diverse flora and fauna added to the overall enjoyment of the hike. It's a great place to connect with nature and enjoy some outdoor adventure. Overall, Sleeping Bear Dunes is a must-visit for nature lovers and hiking enthusiasts. The beautiful scenery and well-maintained trails make it a perfect destination for a day of exploration...

What a beautiful place! The Lake is huge (and I mean incredibly so) and crystal clear, and the sand is golden soft. Every ranger we met was passionate and friendly, and directed us to the loveliest spots. When you come (and you must come) you have to drive the long, woodsy back road to Peterson Road Beach. You'll think you're lost, but then you'll arrive at this tiny parking lot, and you'll hear the waves. Then, you walk with magical boardwalk, surrounded by vast grasses and tall trees in the distance. And the you'll arrive at the beach. Breathtaking. Most people stayed for the stars at night--and stars there are. Also. the Lake Michigan Overlook is an...

Been coming here since I was a kid and just as fun coming back as an adult. Most recently went and brought the dog for a hike while staying in Traverse City for the weekend. Found out dogs weren’t allowed in the dune climb area, but was able to take him out along the lakeshore. Side note- not sure if it was technically allowed, but it was in February and pretty deserted so the place was empty. Fun afternoon! Will definitely be back to camp this spring/summer/fall.

These are definitely dunes! I’ve visited a couple times before as a kid, but this is my first visit as an adult. My friends didn’t want to go up there dune with me, so I ran up pretty quickly to not bore them; please excuse the heavy breathing in the video 🤣. We visited in May, which explains the lack of people- I was the ONLY ONE at the top (ahem, plateau) of the dune, and golly-gee, was the view beautiful! I’d highly recommend everyone visit at least once.
