Although Echo Canyon is my favorite Phoenix hike, Thunderbird CP is our favorite "go to" place. It's within a 10-minute drive, has several trails, and offers a long or short workout...whatever you're looking for. Our favorite trail takes us about 45-60 minutes (parking off 59th Ave.), the other one (parking off Pinnacle Peak) takes us about 30-40 minutes, for when we're in a hurry. If we're feeling ambitious, we'll do both, using the walking bridge to connect. Views are awesome, especially looking north at the mountains! Foot traffic can be heavy at times, but it's always fun to challenge ourselves with someone who's just a little faster than we are. There's a biking trail around the base of the Pinnacle Peak Rd. trailhead (not to be confused with the Pinnacle Peak Mt. hike in north Scottsdale), and then a super short hike (maybe 15 minutes?) over by the outdoor amphitheater (parking off 59th Ave.), if you're a beginner. All trails are challenging enough to be a great workout if you push yourself, but easy enough for kids, if you take your time. Sorry, I don't know the actual names of the different...
Read moreFantastic small mountain range preserve with lots of trails. Horses, pets on leashes allowed. The preserve spreads across several mountains so the are multiple trailhead parking lots. Bathrooms and drinking fountain and pet fountain are there for hydration. All parking lot gates close not long after sunset, but they usually stay around or go close other gates if people are still on the mountain. The reason for 3 Star ⭐⭐⭐ rating is merely because the hikeing trails and desert 🏜️ and lava rock itself isn't much to look at in terms of aesthetics. But the reason this trail is soooo great is once you're on top by the flag pole. You get a glimpse of a seemingly secret community that was the most beautiful lush man made lake system with houses all along with boats and everything. The view absolutely makes it worth it. No water on trails. I've also flown kites with 900ft line on top. Wind is amazing up there and it makes for a cool feeling, effect, and photo. You will want to use professional kite reel and line to avoid breaking the line. There are many easy moderate and challenging routes in...
Read moreGood place to get out and stretch the legs and lungs, soak in a little sunshine, and maybe make a new acquaintance. So many options to choose from for hiking here. The summit trail is a bit technical and has plenty of loose gravel and different level rocks that make focusing on your footing very important. There are side-loop trails, as well as plenty of area to just take the flats. You can make it a 2 mile, all the way up to a 9 mile hike depending on how you take the trail routes. More trails were opened on the north side of Pinnacle Peak. The city has teams out improving the trails, or at least keeping them safe on a regular basis. There is no best time to go, but - depending on weather, season, and day of the week, the mornings are pretty busy. In the cooler weather, more of the day is busy. There is almost always room to go around someone that is slower, and courtesy tends to prevail. Great views of the north valley from the north side of the mountains. Plenty of places to make your dream of being an Instagram...
