Today was my first time here at the castle and it was truly a great experience. Our docent Hanz did a fantastic job showing us around the property and teaching us all about the life and accomplishments of Rubel, who he knew personally before his passing in 2007. Rubel was able to get the land where the former Glendora reservoir existed and shortly after that he began building his castle. It was a collaboration between himself, his friends, friends of friends, and even the neighbors. Everyone collectively worked on the property and he also shared it with everyone who worked there. He was a school bus driver for the Azusa school district so he would bring stones in the bus from the Azusa riverbed all the way back to his castle for the actual building materials. Dotted throughout the walls are countless bottles, statues, and all sorts of other items mixed in.
Everywhere you look there really is something new and unique to see and Iām sure it would take many times walking through to see everything. Parking is extremely easy and plentiful as itās in a quiet residential neighborhood. It is definitely a bit quirky and odd, but at the heart of the property is the story of Rubel and after listening to his philosophies on life and work itās easy to envision why he was a beloved member of the community and still draws visitors to his own...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreSchedule a tour. GO. The amount of history and preservation of history here is incredible. Not only is there Mr Rubel's story to take in, but, the dude giving the tour helped build it. Very lucky to be able to experience this place with hearing from someone who was there. In addition to the history of Rubel and the castle itself, within the walls you will find countless amounts of preserved historical pictures and items. The kitchen has a bunch of stuff from a stagecoach stop preserved. Amazing work shop. Glass Shop. And a really cool printing shop. These sorts of places are becoming far and few between in our world, and, not just being able to still visit such an amazing example of what a man and his dream can facilitate, again having the ability to listen to stories and ask questions for someone who helped build it was such a wonderful experience. Well worth your 90-120 minute and the tour cost. Don't wait! Go to their website,...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreRubelās Castle is a magical and completely unexpected castle created from river rock and found objects over the course of a few decades, beginning in 1968. It was the brain child of Michael Rubel, a Glendora resident who had fallen in love with the citrus farm as a child and purchased the property in 1959.
The Castle has a rich and whimsical history snd was a project that brought many neighbors and members of the community to expand the boundaries of imagination into the tangible.
Huell Howser did two pieces on the place which can be found on YouTube.
It was donated to the Glendora Historical Society and can be toured by contacting them. It is also available for rental for a...
