Richland Chambers Reservoir is a prime fishing and boating spot, but there’s something lurking beneath the surface that ain’t in any fish guide. Locals whisper about it, but most won’t speak on it for too long—the dreaded Mocking Bass.
A buddy of mine, Champ Smithers (you know, the kinda guy who swears he’s seen it all), told me about his run-in with the creature. He was out fishing just past sundown when he heard something strange—his own voice calling back to him.
“Got a bite yet?” it said, clear as day, mimicking his own drawl.
He froze, scanning the water, and that’s when he saw it.
A fish, big as a trophy bass, but with feathers half-tucked along its sides, like it couldn’t decide if it belonged in the water or the sky. Its beady bird eyes locked onto him, and its gaping mouth—lined with small, sharp teeth—opened wide. Then it let out a perfect, bone-chilling imitation of a baby crying.
Champ swears he nearly flipped his boat scrambling to get outta there. The last thing he saw was the Mocking Bass skimming the surface, flapping what looked like slick, wet wings before diving back into the black water.
Folks laugh when he tells the story, but if you ever hear your own voice calling you from the water at Richland Chambers…...

there are no public areas available freely to the public
all the areas gleaned from maps had gates with locks on them or else they're money making enterprises with fees
there used to be tent camping grounds available to the public, free of charge. closed two years ago...
it's absolutely ridiculous the 8th largest lake in the u.s. has zero places people can go and use what has been developed and maintained with taxpayer dollars

Read moreprobably closer to 5 star rating my take on Richland Chambers 1 not an abundant amount of places for public fishing area. 2 lake seems mostly privately-owned shoreline makes difficulties finding much access to the lake #3 Lake built predominantly with blackland the primary shoreline ( difficult to use shoreline for fishing) Having said all of that , from a on the water perspective it's as nice of a lake as you will find anywhere.
