Big sites.some rolling grassland and some trees. Even has a fenced dog park. Showers closed but long drop is clean. Site #112 to 117 look to be primo The incoming (Sunday) ranger was super helpful and friendly. It was going to be cold at night 4C and it's quite a stiff breeze off the lake so we chose #141 in the trees near the dog park . There's only one other camper in our quadrant.
The trees are starting to turn. Last night it was just above frost Used no electricity and carried our own water. The reason I only rated it "4" instead of 5? The Monday staff charged us $32 for electrical site even though we didn't use it. Doesn't seem fair. Why should we pay the same rate as folks who run their tv, stove, heaters and airconditioners full blast, burning electricity 24 hours? Supposedly there is a primitive area but nothing is marked. $24 would have been fair; $32 is unfair to low impact campers like us. For crying out loud, even the flush toilets were unavailable in our quadrant and there was no showers and certainly no hot water! I hate paying for electric if I don't use it and subsidizing energy hogs. Time for the administration to rethink their electric policy, especially for the off season when 2/3 of the sites have no amenities! And the grounds are almost empty. Why not just trust us when we say we...
Read moreWe camped here for a weekend in the summer. This North Dakota State Park is a fishing paradise! The visitor center is a giant baitshop! There are fish cleaning stations, a boat ramp, beach and fishing dock within walking distance of the entrance.
While we did some fishing, we were in a double group site with some friends. The bigger site was awesome, and allowed for us to set up large yard games. We hung out around the fire, and had a blast all weekend. We hiked some of the trails and around the lakeshore. The playground was good too, and my daughter had a fun time.
You can tell that this is one of the better funded ND State Parks, all of the facilities we're clean and cared for. I imagine that this is one of the busier parks, being on Devil's Lake. The only caveat being reservations. You have to make them plenty early to get a spot. We did. There are quite a few single spots all the way to group spots for four campers. If you wanted to throw a weekend camping and fishing blowout, this would be the park!
I'd definitely...
Read moreIt is a beautiful state park off in its own little world. A very pretty view on the drive out and huge campgrounds for staying. We stayed at Howard Campground.
There were lots of trails for walking, fishing if you are into that and parks for kids. The swimming area was pretty green and gross, but we found other things to entertain the kids. The campsites were large and well taken care of. We had all the amenities we needed with no issue! We were close to shower house, which was nice as well. The visitor's center was also a great perk if you needed anything and didn't want to go into town.
We were a little frustrated with not being able to set up a small tent on the same site as our camper. They stated one unit per site, but many other sites, that were not group sites, had multiple units. Frustrating that it seemed they singled us out to not have this same privilege as many others did. A beautiful place we would like to return...
