Awesome place to go and check out. The road back is bumpy, but not bad at all. Once you get to the parking lot, there are informational signs and the path to the beach. The hike back there was only like 3/8 of a mile. So that's 3/4 of a mile in and out, very easy. When the trail opens up, your mouth will certainly drop at the beauty. I didn't make it on top of the rock formations next to the lake, but I was informed that there are vernal pools on the top of them. As I understand it, the volcanic activity had formed these pool cavities. You can also see the path of lava flow that had followed into the lake in the Rock formations on the shore. Fissures that now have pockets of moss. You will not regret this. I would recommend doing this earlier in your trip in case you wanted to go back before you leave. We went here on the last full day we had up here and I definitely regret not going sooner. Rocks everywhere, even the beach is 100% rocks. Honestly, way better chance if finding agates or yooperlites here than right next to the state...
Read moreI wish I could give this 5 stars and a few years ago I would have. I have been coming to this place for almost 20 years and remember the days when it was basically 2 track and really needed a pretty good vehicle to get to the parking area. Over the years it has grown to be a very popular place and must have received lots of funding the last few years as the road has pretty much become a well-cared for wide road and a parking lot for lots of vehicles. I did not notice until we exited and someone commented about us having a dog that it is now clearly (not for all of us obviously) posted and the new and very huge sign stating "no dogs". I understand many people abuse the use with their dogs by not picking up after them or having them off leash, but we go everywhere with our pup. For the most part, we love this spot for the scenery, swimming, and great picnic spot. Definitely not a trail for the individual who may have some difficulty walking or potentially some age with not great balance. The trail has lots of rocks and roots to trip even the...
Read moreWhat a great find! A random trip up to the Keweenaw Peninsula, stayed the night in Copper Harbor and decided to explore the next morning before heading back south and east. We drove to the end of the road. Had no cell service to see a map clearly but kept driving past the Start of the US Hwy 41 and found a parking lot with a trailhead… it was about a .5 mile to the beach. It was rough terrain with lots of roots to climb over. Once the trees opened up to the beach.. we discovered how rocky the beach was. Clear water and beautiful views. Lots of exploring and hunting for rocks. The trail was so peaceful and fun to hike through. I enjoyed that this place. It wasn’t very busy either. 1 day after Labor Day weekend. Water was definitely swim...
