I live in the Chicago area so it’s an 8.5 hour drive. That drive turns off a lot of people (I can hear it now “I can fly to Denver for $250”) but as I tell my friends... its worth it. Plan a long weekend (keep in mind they are east coast time). One day at Bohemia will tire you out and save your pocket book compared to out west. If you are a strong intermediate you will find plenty of fun terrain (you don’t have to ski the cliffs or the steep tree runs). The 900 foot vertical makes a big difference compared to the other Midwest hills. Ten to fifteen-minute runs are the norm… even if you don’t stop (hard not to stop because its technically difficult). The amount of snow they get is amazing and this year was more than some places out west. Part of the “danger” of Bohemia is that the runs are not groomed and there are lots of unmarked obstacles and trees in steep areas- so take the warnings seriously. Its a natural terrain park. The one problem with no grooming is that if you have a warm day followed by a cold night- the skier made groves and tracks are frozen the next day. So watch the weather and avoid that if you can. Speaking of watching the weather- that’s what the regulars do here- they are always on the lookout for a powder day (and there are a lot due to lake effect snow). The amount of snow they get (270 inch average) is no B.S. and will shock you. Bohemia sits on a peninsula that jets out almost to the middle of Lake Superior- so it’s a lake effect factory. The lake also keeps the temps a bit warmer than you would otherwise think for being so far north. The "Apres Ski", lodging and staff are quirky- but that’s part of the appeal of this place. Its so different than anywhere else! The crowed is made up of some old guys like me, ski bums and college kids. Not a place to go out to the bars and meet women, but that’s not why you come here. Someone described it as ski camping. Lodging is limited and fills up fast so book early. Trust me- believe the hype, leave the kids and beginners at home, suck up the drive and go experience Bohemia- you will become an advocate...
Read moreAfter a long day of riding me and some friends decided to take a trip to the Nordic Spa where we were presently surprised with how cool that environment felt. However, there is a MAJOR lack in customer service, to be more specific the bartender that was there Saturday night (01/25/25).
To start the night off we attempted to get some drinks at the bar, the bartender started off extremely rude and borderline mean to me and my friends. We got our drinks and went on our way to enjoy the spa. About an hour in we were happy with the hot tub, saunas and other amenities the resort had to offer.
Then that same bartender came out to the hot tub and started hysterically screaming at some other people in the hot tub for bringing in outside drinks. This bartender made an absolute scene and ruined the vibe for everyone in the hot tub. I went and spoke with the people who brought in outside drinks assuming they were told to not do that and this was a repeating event. Unfortunately, that was not that case and they did not know that was company policy. That bartender was completely out of control and came back multiple times to lecture everyone in the hot tub not to bring outside drinks in…even though there was only that one event that happened.
It got to the point where it completely ruined our night, wasted our money and packed up and drove back to Houghton to stay at a hotel. There is clearly something going on with this bartender and she should not be in the customer service industry. We are all extremely disappointed we wasted money, time and what could have been an amazing experience all ruined by one individual. Mount Bohemia needs to do better with who they are hiring, people should not have to go through this for something that could have been handled with a simple civil conversation instead of yelling. We will not be going back, which is a shame because it really has potential to be an amazing pace, all it needs is the right...
Read more5 stars for the skiing, 3 for the food and lodging, 4 for the atmosphere.
Skiing: Awesome! Nothing is groomed, so early season intermediate can ski the handful of not gladed runs but they quickly turn to moguls as the season progresses. Ratings are tricky the blacks and blues have more obsticles (creeks, rocks, etc) than in other plances. Double blacks at bohemia are anything with trees, regargless of steepness. Some of the flatter glade runs would be blues out west. Two lifts get you up and there is a large portion that is served by a shuttle. When it is really cold the shuttle can be a nice warming hut.
Lodging: If you stay there you can do hostel (a bed in a room of beds under the log cabin bar), a cabin (4 twins with linens), or a yurt (8 twin and a futon with no linens). I have stayed in the cabins and yurts. Depending on the size of your party either makes sense. Hotels are available in Houghton/Hancock about 60-45 minutes away.
Dinner and breakfast are included if you stay there. Dinner is a rotating entree like chicken fajitias, pulled port sandwiches, etc. that includes water, salad, and dessert. Breakfast is two sausages and two pancakes...every day.
The lodge: 5 (1 added for 2017-2018) yurts connected together make up the kitchen, rentals, north pole bar, eating and picnic areas. There is also a newish log cabin bar with hot tub (for loging guests). Season pass holders have to go to one of the bars (moves based on how busy they are) and get looked up in the book and issued a ticket for the day. Day passes should go to the food/rental yurt in the lodge.
Atmosphere: Really laid back and fun. Nothing stuffy or snooty. It can also turn to a party atmosphere. We have had some noise issues in the yurts when we had young...
