A Beautiful tribute and living spirit of the Guthrie family of musicians. The Guthrie Center occupies the Old Trinity Church (a magnificent cultural preservation). Weekly community lunches are served to-go on Weds., Thursday is open mic night on the stage (altar). Tables and chairs set-up for lunches and music nights. Interfaith services also provided. While there, I heard people of the community calling to reserve a spot because Thanksgiving dinner will be served. Musical instruments available for rental Small gift shop with classic Guthrie designs (i.e. shirts with The W group logo) A trunk full of CD's from various artists for purchase A small cafe on premises IF you're a fan of Alice's Restaurant you will note the red mini-van parked out front- and the fact the church parallels the RR tracks. Alice’s Restaurant isn’t around anymore. But, as the song says, “Alice didn’t live in a restaurant. She lived in the church nearby the restaurant…” And the old Trinity Church, where Alice once lived and where the saga began has become home to The Guthrie Center. I walked away from visiting this place feeling touched to meet Guthrie family members and others that keep this facility running and open to the community. ** DON"T forget to leave a donation to further music education and...
Read moreWonderful atmosphere in this community venue and a relaxed welcoming feel enhanced by the mix of professional staff and volunteers. We were very fortunate to be guests there to see Seth Grier perform. His musicianship was great and his vocals and range haunting and beautiful. His subject matter was expressive and mind expanding. We loved his weaving of concerns about the environment into his performance and we fell in love with him by the end of his set. Such a thoughtful young guy with real connections to the Guthrie Centre. We wish the Guthrie Centre well in all its outreach work and the world needs...
Read moreA real find, for fans of folk music and the Guthrie (Woody and Arlo) family - probably of little interest to others. It's the original church from the events of "Alice's Restaurant," nicely restored and now housing a small museum of artifacts but also operating cultural and social services functions. Members of the Guthrie family are actively involved. There is no cost to enter and get a casual tour. (The original site of Alice's Restaurant itself is over in Stockbridge, and is marked but not currently open to...
