Once upon a time, in a land where potholes outnumber people and road cones live longer than politicians, there stood the Louisiana Welcome Center—proudly greeting travelers with a handshake, a shrug, and the faint smell of mildew.
The building itself is a relic of a time when someone maybe allocated a budget, but probably spent it all on beignets and campaign stickers. The landscaping says “retired prison crew,” the brochure rack features events from 2017, and the water fountain gurgles like it’s questioning its purpose in life.
Inside, a sweet lady named Miss Judy will warmly welcome you, offer you a map printed during the Clinton administration, and pretend like I-20 isn’t currently held together by duct tape and swamp prayers.
Bathrooms? They exist. Flush at your own risk. If you’re lucky, you’ll get a soap dispenser that works and a hand dryer that sounds like it’s trying to take off into orbit.
But hey—free coffee, AC that mostly works, and enough Southern charm to distract you from the structural decay. Louisiana: come for the gumbo, stay because your...
Read moreParking was full. We are pulling a vehicle and barely had room to park or turn around. The bathrooms were dirty with unflushed toilets and bloody tampons, no air was on, all restrooms were closed but 1 in the very back which is a decent walk from the front. We slept there for the night bc we were super tired. Got up in the morning to use the bathroom and ALLL restrooms closed because they said they had no water. So I had to go to loves down the road which is ridiculous considering I was right there at the bathrooms and had to walk all the way to the back to find out they were closed. The security guard kept riding around and going the wrong way down the roads into oncoming traffic into the rest area and he'd have to back up to get out of their way. So far, not impressed with Louisiana. Even the Loves had no air and the heat in...
Read moreWe stop here every time we come to Louisiana after an almost 4 hr drive from our home. The place is always clean and stocked for the weary travelers and Road Warriors. The Welcome Center has numerous restrooms setup on both sides of the building and restrooms for handicap and family use. The restrooms are made of stainless steel, so I see these lasting along time with all the use they will be taking.
I will suggest that you do make your way inside the visitors area and get yourself a cup of strong FREE Coffee and look at the attractions Louisiana has to offer. The staff is always friendly and willing to help you make the most of your visit and directions.
The picnic area is laid out nicely and enough room to take your dogs for...
