I did not know about the bunkers until I stumbled upon them online. I had been researching abandoned sites in Pennsylvania after learning of the former POW camp near Shippensburg. Through internet and social media searching, I found the bunkers among several other abandoned military facilities across Pennsylvania. Thankfully, people have noted online where exactly the bunkers are. This was helpful since the site was abandoned years ago. The military base where the bunkers are is long gone, and they are now deep in State Game Lands # 252 between Williamsport and Allenwood in Union County. The directions I found to get to them involved parking in a stone lot on Alvira Road, which is also next to a Game Commission facility. Be mindful of what time of year you go, as you will travel on foot through Game Lands where hunting is allowed. What I noticed is that with how the bunkers are laid out, hunters may not be able to see you, so follow the wear orange rule. Overall, it was a cool visit walking among the bunkers and being able to see inside some. From the outside, it is deceiving as to how big they are. The ones I did go into were about the size of a...
Read moreThese bunkers are very cool! There's a seasonal road to travel if you go later in the summer but when we came before the road was closed we had to walk more. It's totally worth it either way! Walking we found 7 bunkers (stick to the trails they aren't randomly in the woods) driving we found 2 cemeteries and about 5 more bunkers. Great time, the bunkers are very echo-y, fun to stomp or scream in them, and it's completely free. There are a bunch of ticks and mosquitoes so bring bug spray. There are game wardens and stuff since it's state game land they might stop you and see what you're doing, when it happened to us he was very great about it just simply wanted to see what we were doing and unfortunately couldn't offer any insight on where the bunker locations were. Simply stick to the main paths and you will find them there are plenty. Dog friendly but theres glass broken from all the drunken people that smash their beer bottles in the bunkers so get them doggy shoes...
Read moreI liked it. It was interesting and free. This place can be fairly soggy/muddy. In warmer weather....the insects will be out in force. Winter would be the best time to visit. The "bunkers" are on state game lands. Be careful... you're on your own. These structures are not maintained or inspected. You're basically....out in the woods exploring abandoned stuff. There's some walking involved. You can read about this place on the internet. It has an interesting history. Bring a flashlight. If you have kids with you, be mindful, there's some offensive, profane, anatomical graffiti inside...
