Loved going here!!!
This review will cover a few things you may also have quesions about as all my reviews do, as well as some tips to planning...
We did all three things here to do. Miners maze, the cave tour and the wildlife tour.
Miners maze: Fun!! We enjoyed this more than we thought we probably would, it dont seem to big, but it gets way bigger inside. I wish there was more like these around. Overall, if your not good at these, expect this to take up to 15 mins.
Cave tour. Amazing! This takes around 40 mins. If you book an online ticket, be sure that your aware that your time may go passed the ticket time. We had tickets for 3pm, however did not board a boat till 315. out and off right about 4. It does get cold in here, like they warn. However, if your like me and sit usually in front of an air conditioner all summer, you will enjoy it. I went in shorts and a tshirt, and loved the temps in here.
!! This entrance / exit has a pretty steep hill to go up and down. Getting onto the boats can be a balancing challenge for those who may have issues, but overall not bad. I strongly advise coming here alert! Some of the areas of the cave can be very tight and you will have to lean in pretty good. If your afraid of tight spaces, this can also be a challenge in some of your tour !!
Safari Tour: Unique! We have done them all over, including down at Lake Tobias. This one is way better, as they have part of the tour where you get off the bus and go and see more up close. The busses you board are literally a school bus type bus with the roof, so no sunburning like others. The windows are not there though, so comfortable and plenty of air flow.
!! We took the last tour, and did not see the wolves or the bear. I feel like your better off trying to hit this in the morning or mid day to see more !!
I highly appreciate the fact the our guide gets off the bus to get the animals to come up closer to get perfect views of the animals.
We booked the cave tour for 3pm, the safari tour for 430. While they say the cave tour takes 45 min, we appreciated this big time by doing it this way, as we didnt get back from the cave area till about 405. I would highly advise giving yourself a 30 min window minimum beween trips in case something runs behind.
There are 2 smoking areas if needed, Parking is free. Bathrooms are nice and large, and up front off the parking lot.
The gift shop serves as a hub. Sraight thru is the maze and where you will meet the safari group to board the bus, in and to the left takes you down to the cave. One of the smoking areas is over here for before or after you do the cave tour.
If you get tickets online, they do a good job at seeing the combos and refunding the money owed back, so dont worry about this. Getting your tickets if advanced purchased, all you need is your last name. Be sure o check your tickets for amount and what you paid for. They only had one set of tickets ready, but when i told them i did buy everything else they quickly checked and got them immediately for me.
SOCIAL DISTANCING / COVID-19
-Masks recommended in main gift shop. -Boats for cave tour maxed at 14 per boat. --No one on boats wore them. -Safari: Half wore them. Staggered seating.
Overall, i will be back again. We very much enjoyed this day here, and would love to do it again in different seasons. Very unique place that we...
Read moreI have been here twice. The first time was a great experience. The last time, left a lot to be desired.
I tried buying tickets the day of, only to find out same day tickets cannot be purchased. I called and asked if they had walk in tickets available and was told to just come in before 2pm and we'll be fine. We live nearly 3 hours away so I didn't want to risk them running out.
We arrived prior to 2pm and apparently they got very busy during our drive there. We took the very last tickets available for the cave tour but had to wait until 5:00 for the next available ride. The man who helped us at the counter was less than happy to be at work. He didn't greet us or even look up at us a single time. He seemed extremely frustrated to be dealing with the bookings. The other staff however, did seem extremely friendly.
We had intended on doing an entire package with the wildlife tour and maze too but they informed us that there weren't tickets for the wildlife left that would allow us to get back in time for the cave tour. We ended up leaving and coming back for the boat ride due to the large amount of people in the gift shop and not being able to look around. We also tried to grab some food from the cafe but they had closed.
Not a huge deal, but the bathroom was in rough shape. I don't think they had enough staff to tend to it. The stalls were out of toilet paper and toilets overflowing with nasty stuff.
We did enjoy the actual tour in the end. The tour guides are always amazing and ours kept us laughing. The cave itself is beautiful. They sat 22 of us on a boat, which made it quite uncomfortable to squeeze in next to strangers. Shoulder to shoulder, very awkward to be touching legs with others. Aside from that, it was a good experience.
Lessons learned: Buy tickets at least one day prior. Don't assume they'll have walk in tickets if you're traveling from far away. And avoid weekends if possible as it gets extremely crowded and...
Read moreWhat an awesome little place in the middle of nowhere! We just happened to find this while searching for unknown Pennsylvania attractions thinking we could find something we never knew about, we'll we did!!!
First, don't let this place fool you, they get very very busy! I highly recommend you buy your tickets beforehand and do not do walk-in tickets. You think just because you're in the middle of nowhere this place doesn't get busy and you would be sadly mistaken. We did walk-in tickets and they were already sold out of the wildlife tours but luckily we got into the cavern tour. We wanted to do both but that's our own fault for not pre-purchasing.
The on-site restaurant is typical quick food, but definitely nice to have if you've made a road trip and you're hungry. If you're a walk-in ticket you might find yourself waiting a few hours so it was nice being able to grab some food. The staff was incredibly friendly and super helpful. They provide a military discount which I think is incredible and come to find out they are veterans themselves and very supportive of those who have served. The overall demeanor of their entire staff was just down to earth and very friendly.
I can only speak on the cavern tour, because as I stated we missed out on the wildlife tour. First off yes it's 52° down there so dress appropriately or you will be cold! Second, the boats are very stable but pretty narrow so be prepared to get close to strangers LOL. Thirdly, you will literally feel like you are in prehistoric dinosaur times as you drift through these caverns and tunnels but man is it amazing!
Bottom line if you want something to do that's different, this is a pretty cool adventure and well worth the time and the trip. Buy your tickets ahead of time and get both tours in....
