We decided to visit Grosse Ile and when I saw this location near the airport I knew my kids would love it. We pulled up and walked inside but it’s not obvious where to go - I first looked into and opened the office door but I interrupted a conversation and the lady shuffled me down to the end of the barn to the gentleman who was leading the activity. We assumed it would be a tour with some history, details, and some experiences petting and feeding (like most sanctuaries, etc). It was just him and 2 moms and 2 baby alpacas away from the rest of the herd. No instructions, no speech, just walked out and watched over us. So…we just started to try and pet them. After 5 minutes I started asking the man questions about them and it got better - he started giving me amazing details about the challenge of raising these alpacas and how particular they are for raising. I had no idea how much special attention and unique they are vs a normal farm animal. The girls did enjoy it but the experience was still pretty limited (maybe we came at a bad time). We also had to prod to visit the gift shop and bought some items. It would be nice to know which are commercial items and which are from his alpacas - it’s not clear and some of the items are purchased from unrelated places. I only know the yarn did come from his alpacas as he mentioned this. Overall this was an interesting visit and the price is right (donation only) but it’s clear they are not building a zoo and really focus on the farming so it is a bit awkward at first so just understand you might have to apply some effort to extract the...
Read moreAlpacas are very interesting animals, and Gibralter Bay Alpacas does a great job demonstrating that. I was amazed with the welcoming staff and the knowledge they have about the alpacas. I got to learn more about the animal while also petting and feeding them. They are very friendly and social. I came in with white tennis shoes and I left the same way. Gibraltar Bay Alpacas farm is very clean and well maintained. If I was an alpaca I'd want to be there, considering the fresh food and the care given to them. I do recommend checking out the store, as they also have a great selection of items. I will visit again, and also recommend anyone who loves alpaca to check out Gibralter Bay Alpacas for I found it to be a...
Read moreThis is the most amazing hidden gem I’ve found thus far in the state of Michigan. I bought a sweater here that is GORGEOUS and cost 1/2 what it would have been elsewhere. Beautiful fitted piece, French cuffs, perfectly shaped- less than $200! I can not wait to go back and the next time I will be Christmas shopping as they had socks, gloves, earmuffs- every deer hunter and ice fisherman’s dream as it’s warmer than wool, hypoallergenic, and moisture resistant! Everyone needs to check this place out!
FYI, as a hobby I have taken up popping in at Alpaca farms and have yet to find anywhere with as low prices for high quality so my only real wish is that they had an online store for their in...
