during the winter this supposed to be the slower time but there were 70 cars in the parking lot, so if that's slow I hate to see it in the summer! How many people are there! After an hour drive the first thing I had to try out was the porta potties. The porta potties were fairly clean and okay to use at least for those who don't need to sit down. The seat was a little wet if you do. But not a bad smell and looks like they're well-maintained. We decided to take the low road as it looks like the path less traveled, teehee. But even that was a little too muddy and icy for us so we decided to hit the beach. I would say the best time to see this place is not in the spring or on a warm winter day. The path along the beach was more icy than muddy but it has some great views and some interesting flora. We had fun watching a swan enjoy the winter day on the ocean. It definitely more matches our style being on the beach then a muddy path. This park has a good mix of both the woods and the beach and even when we can't walk on the beach we took the path less traveled through the woods. If you're looking for more time alone, I would definitely start walking in the woods, on the paths you run into a lot less people. We tried the red and blue path and found some interesting hiking, these also look like good biking trails. There is also the white path through the woods which we crossed but didnèt walk on too much. The trails zigzag across the park and it looks like you can spend a lot of time wandering them. We were able to find a nice rock near the point of the bluffs that was out of the wind to eat our lunch and watch the waves. The masking is about 50/50, some people are being good about it and some people are not. There are a lot of dogs being walked, most of them were on leashes. It looks like on a warmer day this would be a great place to put your chair on the sand and watch the waves. As it was, after a couple minutes we were warm and enjoying the walking and fresh air. We will definitely be back to hike again even if the potholes on the road into the park can...
Read moreA great state park and seaside location in the State of Connecticut. For me there is no better beach in the State then the one at the end of the main trail. To walk to the beach from the parking lot it took me 25 minuets, 10 seconds and 0.8 milliseconds (I walked at a normal pace and timed my self on my phones stop watch).
What I like about the beach is its cleanliness and natural beauty. This is an unspoiled natural seashore. While walking you have a salt water tilde estuary to your right (which you can swim in), a salt water lake (which you can also swim in) and then finally the ocean facing beach with its beautiful sand dunes and blueish green sea grass which acts as a barrier between the ocean facing beach and the salt water lake on the other side.
The beach depending where you are grades from small fine pebbles and sea shells to finer sand. The sand seems to be closer to the sand dunes and as you get closer to the water you have fine small pebbles (this is a result of the last ice age and the large deposits of granite rock in the area which partly forms the eventual bluff a few hundred feet away).
The water when I went yesterday was quite warm. A gentlemen on a bicyclical had measured the water temperature with a pool thermometer and the water temp registered according to him at about 82F. (This was at 1:30 in the after noon). There is a nice grad to the depth of the water once you get in from the beach (it does not get deep overly quickly).
If walk the full length of the beach there is an island you can walk to at low tide via a sand bar that connects. The Island is Bushy...
Read moreThis place is GREAT! you can walk the well marked trails. I saw a woman with a walker on the trails, thats how well they are kept. Theres a couple areas you can walk to (its about 1/2 mile to the beaches), where there are tables to picnic and dig for clams. It is shady so you arent going to fry like a piece of bacon while walking. Great for jogging too.. you can make it semi short or walk the 3.8 miles around and theres also another trail to the left when you come in that will add more distance. (Its on all trails too) Its wide so.you aren't bumping into people and its almost impossible to get lost if you stick to the main trail. Bring bug spray though. There were a few bugs but we weren't overrun. The parking lot is huge and even if it looks pretty full, its such a huge area that you will still have many areas where you are walking alone. There are picnic tables at the very beginning too so you can enjoy the water view without walking. Its a great place for the family. Kids can explore and swim...
