Heard about this place via the Sonoma County instagram and I was intrigued that there was an off-the-beaten-path place to enjoy an easy walk through the redwoods without facing the crowds of Armstrong or Muir Woods. The road out to this location is a bumpy little lane that seems endless, but nevertheless enjoyable for the beautiful foliage and quaint houses on either side. The lot has plenty of parking considering the lack of visitors, and there are a couple of trail heads you can take that wind around in a pretzel of loops, so you can't exactly get lost. There is no map of the grove posted, but it is quite unnecessary given the scale and connectivity of the trail. I'm excited that pets are allowed on leash here, and I'm looking forward to bringing my dogs during my next visit. I would not recommend a stroller unless you've got one that can go offroad. The trails are very flat overall, with some leading down slight/rocky declines, and wide enough to walk side-by-side. I came during a break in the rain so there was quite a bit of water on the trail, and though it wasn't overly muddy thanks to the ground cover, I recommend heartier hiking boots for these conditions. I was stunned by the solitude and quiet here - I saw no one except for a mother and her two children at one point. If you are looking for a longer hike, you may want to look elsewhere, but if you want a peaceful stroll through the redwoods away from the sounds of people and traffic, this is a great place to put...
Read moreAbout a 30 minute drive from Healdsburg. Great old growth redwoods, free to get in and almost nobody there! Probably due to the fact it's not widely promoted like Armstrong Park and it's a little father south. Nice trails with redwood mulch to walk on, benches here and there to sit and even a couple of picnic tables. Warning!!- Cell phone service is spotty so download directions just in case you lose your signal. We lost ours for a bit but were told we were lucky that we didn't completely lose it. Also, the road for about the last 2 miles in is extremely narrow, one lane only and 15 mph speed limit!! It's very narrow and curvy. So watch for oncoming traffic and be prepared to move over(sometimes scraping brush) to get past other vehicles. We had several very tight encounters. But overall, to see magestic old redwoods while avoiding crowds, this is a great place!! Very quiet and serene. There were 3 cars in the small lot when we showed up but nodybody there...
Read moreNice, small grove that requires a lot of picturesque driving to visit.
Fitzgerald is a narrow and apparently affluent road. The parking lot fits about 20 cars at most. The walk around the grove's well maintained paths is level and very short. The whole thing can be walked inside a half hour.
There is no water and no toilet of any kind.
The grove is a mix of a few old growth trees, a lot of second growth and a good number of smaller redwoods, including saplings. The forest floor is covered on wonderful ferns and a good mix of plants. I did not see any redwood sorrel. There are many more redwoods on the private land adjacent or along the roads. There are some vinyards and other open lands alongside the grove.
Signs tell the story of how this parcel was saved from the ax.
Coleman Valley Road is wonderfully narrow, windy and isolated providing a spectacular drive to the coast coming out between Jenner...
