Read moreThis park was the closest to our cottage in the woods, the first beach we visited in Michigan and our reference point for the other parks we visited. It's a beautiful beach, quiet, many shady spots and plenty of sun. Many families, locals as well as visitors were there but the beach is big enough for everyone without being crowded.
Everyone mentions "the stairs" so the part I'll mention is that my knees are weak to begin with, so I was hesitant to even attempt them, but knew I would have regrets if I didn't try..... There are 2 places along the way that has seating to rest, so that saved me on the way back up... Also, considering that some parks don't even have steps and you have to walk up and down a soft sand hill without them, well! I'll take those steps any day! :)
The trees open up to am amazing view of Lake Michigan. There are 2 areas for parking, so if it's full when you pull in, just keep driving and you'll get to an almost deserted second area.
It's a wonderful hidden gem that's...
Read moreHagar Beach is an unsung hero of the local beaches in the SW corner of Michigan. We stayed at the Covert KOA and traveled the 15 minutes to the beach.
The beach was clean and the sandbar extends 100 yards. Waist deep is the deepest it goes. This gives ample space for the kids to safely play.
There were very few people on the beach giving us a very private experience. It is also very dog friendly. They ask that dogs stay on a leash, but a lot of them were out swimming. It was amazing.
The only downsides are: you may miss the entrance since it is a small (unadvertised) park. There is a great kids play area and steps that lead down to the beach.
The beach is at the bottom of a mountain of stairs. The county did a great job constructing them in a way to minimize the climb, but be prepared to travel down the stairs. This is NOT accessible in wheelchairs, or people with bad knees/legs.
Overall, I cannot recommend this...
