I practically live at Brooksvale Park. I come to the park which is actually mostly a farm with with my students from the school I work for, and then also frequented regularly with my family and friends as I live less than a mile from it. While I'm here I am always more than satisfied with my visit. Brooksvale Park is a hidden gem in northern Hamden southern Cheshire. it connects to the Farmington canal trail which runs from New Haven to Northampton Massachusetts. You can visit for free and see farm animals such as chickens goats sheep and miniature horses. They now have an on-site beekeeper maintaining bee colonies and making local honey. Over the winter they tap the maple trees and have a sugar shack to make on-site maple syrup. In the fall there's a fall festival with bands and food trucks and at Halloween they have a haunted hayride that goes through the woods. There is extensive trails that go to naugatuck State Forest, picnic grounds, and large sports fields. There's a pond for ice skating in the winter. There's a playground for little kids with swings. Honestly this place can't be beat for the price (free). Many people come here to get their pictures taken because of the beautiful foliage and because the grounds are so scenic. You must keep your dog on a leash but there are plenty of kids and dogs roaming about on a daily basis. I work for a school serving individuals with severe disabilities and we come very frequently and are always treated with respect and dignity. We are always welcomed back. There is a small hall located right next to the pond behind the barn which has a wildlife educational room in the basement. Very interactive and very good for kids. Can't say enough good things about Brooksvale Park. Hopefully one day I can volunteer here making maple syrup in the sugar...
Read moreMy wife and I were basically accosted by the young man who takes care of the animals at this place. When we arrived he informed us (quite rudely) that the facilities would be closing soon. So instead we chose to take a hike in the nearby woods. As we returned from the hike in the dusk the same rude young man basically jumped out of the darkened treeline and started yelling at us (not wearing a mask, BTW). He verbally attacked us for still being on the premises despite the fact that he'd earlier only said the parks facilities were closing--not the trails in the woods too. Feeling threatened by this aggressive person we made our way back to our car to leave, all the while being followed and yelled at by the animal caretaker. When we got to the parking lot another couple was preparing leave as well but couldn't because one of their friends had gotten lost in the woods. Rather than offer to help, the angry worker then proceeded to start yelling at them. He should be fired immediately and honestly whatever type of anger or substance abuse issues he has need to be addressed by a professional....
