Terrible experience with the RV Park setup. Arriving after 1PM made things excruciatingly difficult. Called 3 times the week prior to try to make the process as painless as possible still didn't help. If you arrive after 1 PM I was told to find a spot, park the RV, drive over to the nature preserve to check in and get the power turned on. Arrived at 230 PM, picked a spot, got the trailer backed in, and then a park employee stopped as he was driving by to tell us that the power didn't work at that spot. Picked spot number 2 and moved the trailer. Got it backed in, leveled and disconnected. Drove 20 minutes over to the nature preserve to check in. Once I filled out the paperwork I was told the spot I picked wasn't usable and we would once again have to move to a spot they assigned. Not happy but it is what it is. Met one of the park rangers that said he'd be over shortly to turn on the power. Went back to break down and hook up the trailer, and move to the new spot. Got it parked and level, but didn't want to disconnect again until they showed up to turn the power on. Called the nature preserve to check on the status of someone coming to turn the power on, and was told he'd be there within the hour. Called back an hour later to be told he went home for the day and the only available park ranger had to wait until the nature preserve closed at 6 and then cashed out. Ranger showed up and made excuses about how it wasn't their job and we should just be happy they came and did it. The only redeeming quality is the location to the family we're visiting. If you're arriving after 1 PM when the park office closes I would use this place as a...
Β Β Β Read moreWe arrived here at 4PM on a Sunday and picked a spot. All the spots are FCFS. The first spot's electrical plugs had an ant nest in them and one 30A plug was cracked/missing parts. Of course, that didn't matter a ton because they physically lock all their pedestals until you've paid. We moved spots.
The park office where you're supposed to register was closed and they wouldn't answer the phone either. So, like every other FCFS campground in the country we planned on settling in the morning when they opened - NOPE. An Gomer city park ranger came pounding on our door and hour after we had unhitched demanding to see our contract. I explained the situation and said we were planning on getting registered as soon as the office opened. He kicked us out at 5PM without a place to stay lined up instead.
The park office closes at 1PM. That's right, 1PM. There is no after hours registration or pay box available. None of this is mentioned on their website or any signage.
We ended up at the Newport News City Park Campground up the road. They actually...
Β Β Β Read moreWe would give the campground a 5 star review but the city really needs to do some updating. We have stayed here twice in the past year once in Aug. 2024 and then just this past week May 2025. There is several campsites that were out of service in Aug. and still out in May of this year. The fly's are horrible both times we stayed and the ticks were so bad this May that you couldn't walk outside without getting a tick on you. My poor dogs couldn't enjoy the area because the ticks were so bad. Come on Hampton Spray for the insects and update the park. Its a great location for a stop over or to do some exploring. As far as the staff goes Top notch without a doubt. And Hampton get with the computer age and setup online reservations. Having the office staff leaving at 1pm and if you don't make it in by 1 you have to drive half way across Hampton to Stoney Bottom Nature park to pay for your site and don't be later then 4:30 because they close and then you cant stay at...
