my family and I have been going to this campground for 15 years and going. This has been by far the WORST experience! Not because of the fellow campers or camp grounds rather the newly hired lady at the campground office who needs an attitude check!
Let me begin to state that we understand and are aware of the campground rules among other "required" behaviors. And needless to say we sincerely respect it by all means! Again, we've been going to this place for 15 years!
We arrived early in the morning to only be welcomed by a rude old lady who had no courtesy to bother saying hi or acknowledging us. Rather, she simply stated "im doing my rounds" and left. The least she could have said was "I will be happy to assist once I am done doing my rounds. We open at 8am today so if you would like to wait by all means." No courtesy, No personality, VERY RUDE and mean!
At 8am when she FINALLY came back to her "office" where all she does is crochet. Very productive might I add! She gave us this grouchy looking face before we even spoke! "What do you want?" Is the response we receive... umm... can't it be "How may I help you?" We then proceed to ask if it was possible to pay for a campsite that a previous camper rented and left. Which btw we verbally spoke with this individual while fishing and he (the previous camper) was very kind to extend his site to us. Now giving and relaying this same type of information to the mean lady she quickly said "No! My job is on the line and I almost got fired!" 1) That's irrelevant to our situation 2) We could careless of her personal issue at work and lastly 3) It is not our responsibility as paying guests of the campgrounds to be accounted for from previous guest issues.
In addition, she felt as if we were lying. Mind you she was also racially profiling us as we spoke to her. We understand campground site rules fairly similar concept as a hotel. Although, it seems the previous renter was not aware that he had to checkout at the office physically. She kept saying no and told us to simply come back at around 12pm when she does her "rounds". We came back at 12:30pm again she had denied us of the site even after having to say we would pay for it. She had told us to come back at 1pm again as she does not believe that the previous renter had left. And she was suddenly showing a very nice attitude towards other white folks who was aftwr us. When she finally did her rounds was when she finally decided to accept our payment. Again, mean and needs an attitude check!
The maintenance guy - Gus I believe was his name whom I spoke to about this situation was truly empathetic, kind and very much helpful!!! He said that Mike Peterson the campgrounds Ranger will be informed of the conversation we had with him.
I've sent out an email to Jeff Craver the Admin for the Forest Preserve grounds. We would appreciate a response back from whoever her superior is.
Update: Never heard any form of response from Mike Peterson or...
Read moreThe Illiniwek Campground Park is a treasure! This county owned property lies directly on the Mississippi River. Both the view and setting here are absolutely stunning.
They offer 25 primitive tent camping spaces and 60 spaces for motorized and non-motorized RVs-pop ups, travel trailers, fifth wheels, motor homes etc.-with water and electric hook-ups. A dump station is available also.
The camping season generally runs April through October. They do not take online or telephone reservations. Either show up with your RV to see if they have space available or drive over to check. If you don’t have your RV with you, you can pay for your site and they’ll put a cone on it until you return that day with your rig.
The park office is open daily. They sell ice and firewood. A camp host is also available during peak season.
This 174 acre forest preserve also has hiking and biking trails, a picnic shelter available by reservation, a playground, and a boat ramp to launch your boat into the Mississippi River. You can also fish here.
There’s bathrooms and showers in the park too.
This is a clean and beautifully scenic park/preserve. I enjoyed watching black squirrels perched on the boulders in a section of the preserve by the river.
The park is easy to get to off of nearby I-80 and there are plenty of stores, restaurants, and bars in the area. It is super convenient to get to just about anything the Quad Cities offer from here including casinos!
Whether you come alone, with your special someone, or with your family or group, having an enjoyable time at this park is...
Read moreThis is a large, fantastic, County-operated park. The location on the outskirts of the small village of Hampton is safe, and the locals are friendly and welcoming.
The section along the Mississippi River (located just below Lock and Dam 14) offers tent and RV camping, and also has a boat ramp. This section closes in November to vehicle traffic, and reopens to vehicles in the Spring. This area, located just below Lock and Dam 14 is also a popular place to fish. The large campground is very nice, and is popular with locals and with people from out of the area. There is a field here, and across the highway, planted in Prairie plants.
Also across the highway is a large, hilly forest preserve with a creek and multiple ravines. This area has a very large network of well-maintained trails that are designed for shared use by hikers and off-road bicycles. A local bike club helps maintain and expand the trail network. Dogs are welcome but must be leashed. Sledding is allowed in the winter in a cleared area accessible from the lower area.
The forested area is accessible from the lower area by the highway, and from the top near a County highway maintenence barn (the road to the upper section is the first street to the left as you enter nearby...
