This was our first stay at McLain State Park....Upon arrival we weren’t offered any information about the store hours & ice or where to purchase wood. The young man in the ranger station wasn’t forthcoming about any pertinent information. We were told “so you’re on site #12, it’s over there”.... He pointed in a direction....
The lake is beautiful.Sunsets are breathtaking!Camping along side this majestic body of water is magical! The new campsites under construction aren’t available yet for rental. They look fantastic they need way more like those!
We were staying on site #12....AVOID Site #12 ….. #12, shouldn’t be a campsite for a 24 foot camper, or a campsite period! It’s not level in any way. The tree roots were sticking out of the ground 2 inches and more in some areas all over this site. The roots were a real tripping hazard especially at night! The remainder of the site is all damp sand and sloped. The inclines on this site made it very difficult to stand and walk or even try to sit in a camp chair during the day and at night was even more treacherous!
The other portions of this site were wet sand the entire 4 days we were there. We had no where level to sit or walk let alone park our Yukon. We had to park it on the root covered hill ,so it wasn’t a level parking spot for our vehicle either, very difficult to get in and out of to say the least! It was a long 4 days. We had to keep rearranging our outdoor sitting area due to the inclines and uneven hole covered ground. There are random holes all over this site that you’ll step into while walking and almost knock you off your feet!
So I’d say if you’re a mountain goat site# 12 would be your dream campsite! Side note: bring at least two power cords the power box is ridiculously far from campsite and shared with your neighbor. The restrooms/shower building is a drive or a long walk to get to,It is all new and...
Read moreUpdate. Let's start with the positive. Beautiful area...it's the UP! Lake Superior view was awesome. Agates can be found. 6:30am eastern or earlier gets u choice of shower, as many of the campers are from the central time zone. Now the bad. There is no way this park is 5 stars. No way. The reviews said facilities clean? Mold in showers, hair and garbage. They are cleaned once a day and with only one shower building left it gets pummeled. Somewhat clean, but old crappy cobbled facilities. Again Michigan is broke dumping money into the turd called Detroit. Look up cleaning people! Hardly any sand beach. Many Small crappy sites. Some nice lake sites. Inland site, Neighbor is 15 feet away. Everyone has an untrained barking yip dog. U know the kind. Kids run wild as parents booze it up. It's a combination of UP inbreds and down state as swipes with no manners. Many of the Electric boxes for the sites require at least 50 feet of extension cord. Nobody uses the correct box for their site. So the twenty amp circuits are tripped often. About 3am it was heaven. Dumb as ses. We're cutting grass on a Sunday. Flinging rocks at $50,000 tow vehicles. Do a day trip but stay somewhere else. Out of states are raped by fees. Dogs whine all through the night. No park rangers. The state of Michigan is broke. The place has way too many campers confined within a very small camp site layout. This is just my opinion. But now u know. Day two we had campfire wood stolen from our site during our day trip to copper harbor. Probably the roving bands of teens using the path running behind many of the sites were they buried the electric. Eagle harbor has an excellent beach with lots of sand. Near the light house. Go there with the...
Read moreGreat State Park with Lake Superior views a Lighthouse and Splendid Superior Sunsets. This is a very beautiful well-maintained campground with new restroom/bathhouse. The roads are paved and easy to get an RV around. We enjoyed it so much we stayed there 2 extra nights. The rock collecting is very good especially in the designated swim area. We found a couple Yooperlites at McLain as well as some local nearby Township/County Parks. Be aware the Public Swim area closes at 10pm. You can’t drive back there at night for rock hunting. There is ample spots along the shoreline and break wall to the lighthouse to fish. There are also many walking paths through the woods and near Lake Superior. The nicer playgrounds for kids are toward the public swim area too. We were there 4 nights with 3 kids who only had bikes and loved it. The playgrounds for campers kids are lacking and really need to be improved. There is a beautiful gazebo you can experience magnificent sunsets at. The campground has a road that’s partially closed due to Lake Superior taking part of the campground back. There’s still many beautiful sites left to either be on the shoreline or get a spectacular view of the lake from your site. The campground has very spacious sites for the most part. The State is very conservative with site estimates where you can fit a larger camper than the measurements state. A very nice campground that would have gotten better ratings if they increase the playgrounds for the kids. Beware cell service is terrible. A great place to truly get away from work if your on vacation. We really enjoyed it and definitely will come back. If I could give it 4.5...
