January 22 2021- On a fine winter afternoon I walked the trails with a friend. We had the place to ourselves with just a few clammers working the mud flats. Quite a few herring gulls picking at the mud moved around by the clammers and a small flock of Canada geese came through. It was just lovely with light snow and the crystal blue sky.
Back in time this place was known for boat building but now it shines as a lovely place for a stroll. At high tide the waters on the west side will have plenty of waterfowl and the salt water marsh on the north end will have its share of red-winged blackbirds and goldfinch. At low tide you will probably see local clammers digging in the mud for quahogs or steamers while raptors soar overhead. The preserve is far enough from Route 123 that you can escape road sounds and focus on the quiet natural world around...

I drove up from the Mississippi Gulf Coast (about 24 hours) just adventuring – as soon as I laid eyes on the end of the trail I was walking, I thought, "Now this... is what I came all this way for!" (even though this stop was a random passing selection off the map of my route). If my phone was not shutting down due to the below freezing temperatures, and if I'd been able to feel my toes, nose, and fingers longer, I could have wandered the area all day.
