Update 9/2024 - We hiked on a much cooler day and loved this hike, it honestly felt so much easier than when we came without enough water on a very hot day. I'd recommend fall or cooler weather. Hiking trail is very well maintained, and a really fun hike!

We hiked from the Compton trailhead, this is obviously a strenuous hike up. Bring lots of water, bring extra water if hiking in the heat. Extremely easy going down, it took us about an hour and a half to get to the main water fall. The hike back was around an hour and a half, plus we hiked to the Buffalo River (the area for canoes) which added an hour. Going down we could almost run most of it except for the large rocks and stairs. We went several days after a rainy week so some areas on the trail were very muddy and slippery, so hiking sticks super helped there. The waterfall itself was running okay, but no more than normal after decent rains. It was windy so the water fall was blowing around which was very cool to watch. It's an easy hike over to the Buffalo River as well, which is beautiful, and the canoe/kayak people have a very easy hike over to the waterfall. The hike out was very difficult, mostly because we were having to ration our water supplies. The trail out is very steep, and levels off towards the parking area. There were a few groups that had to stop and let us pass, and no one passed us. We are moderate hikers, with good hiking experience and hike often, but we are...

I did something huge today! Something I said I'd never ever wanna do cause of the difficulty and reputation it has, but that was years ago and I've done some real ridiculous nonsense since the creation of this page.

I did the 5 mile strenuous trek to the infamous Hemmed In Hollow from👏the👏trail👏head. The tallest waterfall between the Rockys and the Appalachians. There was a rainbow in the waterfall too. Pictures will never do this place justice. I'm so proud of myself right now. Feels like a warm blankey. 🤘🤘🤘🤘

This trail tested the whole milkshake. Ima plus size hiker. My thighs rub. My hips are wide. My shoulders, too. And those factors play a part when you're sliding down slippery, steep boulder narrows of dooooooooooom. The difficulty is spicy, in my opinion, but because of the incline back up. The descent was only challenging because of using only one friggin muscle group and it was slippery.

And to add a little razzle dazzle... we hiked out in the dark.🤘 But it wasn't bad because some trail magic landed my person a super bright flashlight we got to test out. #adventure

My feet hurt. My heart is happy. My Wanderlust is metaphorically running around topless, throwing trailmix in the air while screaming I FRIGGIN DID ITTTTTT!!!!

Climb that...

Do not do this hike unless you are an experienced hiker and are ready for an intense leg workout. This is one of the harder hikes I've done. I rate it 4 stars not because it wasn't beautiful, but because of how hard it is, and the confusing nature of the trails and how easily you can take the wrong trail on the way back. Please find landmarks that you can remember and pay close attention at every crossroads. Please heed the warnings that it is a 1,200 vertical incline on the way back..... BUT, this waterfall is absolutely incredible!! It is this huge cliff about 200 feet up where the water cascades over the cliff and comes down scattered about and tossed by the wind, it's breathtaking. I could stay there all day! There were a lot of really cool mushrooms on the hike that I've never seen before. Just beautiful! The hike back is GRUELING, to say the least. Intense intense constant incline, and WAY too many stairs, and in some areas is not very well maintained. Climbing a few rocks is necessary to return back. It's wonderful, and I'd say it's worth it, but this sucker...

This is probably one of the most famous and highly photographed falls in all of Arkansas due to being the highest in the state. The trail in is pretty well marked and maintained. It is steep, and lined with rock stairs for several parts. Less known and less than 300 feet away around the corner is Diamond falls. Will post a review on that if I can find a location marker. The fall itself is impressive to view due to sheer height. It's so tall and narrow that the wind can actually change the direction of where the falls hit the ground by 20ft or more, and we witnessed this several times. It also creates a beautiful rainbow at certain times of day. The trail to Diamond is up a the right side (if you are facing the falls) almost straight up between bamboo and around the back of the Falls following the bluff around to the left until you see the next one. If you've already made the trek down for Hemmed-In, you owe it to yourself to check out Diamond also.
